I used mesh exclusively for several years. Never had a problem with shattering BBs. Even if you did, by the time it impacts your mesh it loses most of it's velocity, anything that makes it through would just be a minor annoyance. You just want to be careful that you get the good stamped steel stuff, not the cheap mesh out of china that BBs shoot right through. Test it if you aren't sure.

One drawback of mesh that I found in southern California at OP Lion Claws, it doesn't protect your eyes from blowing dust. But we seldom have that problem in Oregon.

I've never been anywhere in Oregon that didn't allow it except for some indoor fields I've seen, but I've started to worry that at some point I'm gonna go to a game and get screwed because I don't have any regular goggles. Everything I have is mesh. Being a big guy, i sweat a lot and even if goggles don't fog they end up with puddles forming at the bottom of the lens from condensation. 4-5 hours into a game any "soap" or even fancy anti-fog treatment is normally useless. The only way i see myself comfortably making it through an all day game would be to have two spare sets in my pack, not very lucrative financially.
