Good Radio for Money

Postby Bic 101 » Sun Nov 13, 2011 6:24 pm

The subject line says it all. I am looking for a good radio for a good price. The only requirement I have is that it needs to have a single, Motorola pin, style mic port.

I know I can look on google for this but I would rather here from someone on AP their experience with the product.

Cheers.

Costco has a good deal on a two pack of Motorola Talkabouts which worked well for me and they usually include earpieces and rechargeable batteries. You can't go wrong as they are fairly rugged and water resistant. Walmart and Bimart also usually has them cheaper than most other retailers too.

I second the Motorola Talkabout. I love mine, a real handy little radio.

I have two Motorolas from a looooong time ago. Like more than five years. They are still kicking and working well.
If not, I have been running with some nice Midlands (two pin) for about 4 games. Worth it.

I use a Midland radio(2 pin) and I got 2 for around 50 bucks on sale somewhere. I highly reccomend midland, or the motorola talkabouts.

Previous Rant RE: Comms wrote:Ok, I'm gonna voice a pet peeve here. The "motorolas" everyone keeps talking about - that's not what they are. They are FRS (Family Radio Service) radios. Multiple companies make FRS radios. We also have people in the community that use Tri-Square (Truly their own system), Land Mobile, Business, CB? (Do we have anyone that actually uses CB?), Amateur, and I think some MURS (Multiple-Use Radio System). In those groupings are different price ranges. Each grouping also has its pro's and con's as far as performance. Please, decide what SYSTEM you will use, then decide what brand so as to figure out how much it will cost to outfit your team.

It is common knowledge.

Also, Motorola's 2-pin configuration and Midland's 2-pin configuration are wired differently, despite using the same connector (and neither is compatible with a Kenwood 2-pin). A headset compatible with one is not compatible with the other.

The more you know...

If he's just looking for FRS, he should go with some low-cost midlands.

I ended up getting Midland GTX760VP4 radios. They were $65 which I am splitting with a friend and they have everything I want. Thanks for the help everyone.
