UTG MK96 Shadow Ops Sniper Review W/ pics

Postby Flak » Sat Apr 14, 2007 11:42 am

my rifleman has the TSD version and its not quite as powerful--can pierce the bottom of a coke can, but cronoed at about 460fps instead of 500. for some reason it did have the same 3rd shot hopup spin-off deal with some AE .25s, and it got worse with PHX .28s. The weird thing was we had him try the basic Crosman .2g and the problem magically disappeared! no joke. like it was straight, on target, and because the bb was lighter, it had a longer range! it was so weird! ne ways, MAXXIMO, i suggest trying some .2s or crappier bbs, i guess. My hypothesis that chinese gun makers make crappy guns made for crappy bbs... i dont know, but it worked for my rifleman!

note: there's a difference between crappy bb's and .20's.

There was wind as this test was done outside, I was using "Straight" brand .30g bbs, wich I was told today is not a good brand. I got much better result with .25 toytechs. I will try to redo the test with .25 and will post the results.

Postby juhnomann » Sun Apr 15, 2007 9:31 pm

I was just wondering is this the same gun as the one listed on airsplat http://www.airsplat.com/Items/AR-UTG-AWP-368B.htm because I don't want to pay money for a shit a$$ gun.

I agree with this until you give it another few tests.

I was just wondering because I didn't know if the L96 differed from the MK96 and on that site it didn't say Shadow Ops or anything so I didn't know if they were different models. So anyway thanks I am gonna go order that.

I redid the test with Toytech 0.25g BB; I still noticed the fluctuating hop up. And due to the light weight, any small winds would change the direction of the bb. But I saw very good Improvement in the accuracy. So don’t buy straight .3 bbs, they are crap.

Here is the target at 50 ft. very good

Here is at 100 ft. acceptable

In my conclusion I can say, I am in a skirmish I can hit an OPFor player at 100ft if he is out in the open. And I can hit and an OPfor player at 50ft even if he is hiding behind a tree with only his head sticking out. Giving that there is not wind.

Ah, that's a bit better. Still needs a tightbore if it were ever to go against post-stock AEG's, but for its price, that's not bad. I might get one if I ever stop being poor/get more opprotunities to play.

If you even find one that's cheap and good, tell me please. It is quite hard to find a stock sniper that's decent AND cheaper than this :lol:

what kind of spring does this gun use? and you said in order to upgrade this gun, you would need a new trigger system? can you show me an example?

In matter of fact I already started upgrading. the Original spring is 6mm in diameter equivalent to lay lax pss2 springs, but I got a 9mm spring (PDI I think) and a laylax piston that works with a 9mm spring. that UTG trigger housing is made of plastic, I don't think It will handle the 500fps spring. that is why I am using a Maruzen trigger system because the housing is made from metal. So..

Original = 6mm Diameter spring w/ plastic piston
Now = 9mm PDI spring w/metal laylax piston.

Needed = 9mm spring guide
