M72.... with a twist

Postby Lift Kit » Sat Dec 08, 2012 12:29 am

Okay, I'm currently looking for the tube, but here's what I'm planning.

Basically, I want to take an M72 tube and convert it to fire 40mm grenades, probably the stryofoam rocket variety for anti-vehicle use. Just a push-button system activating the grenade. BUT. The system will activate TWO grenades. The first will be the normal, forward firing one. The second will always be a canister round of a certain size (to be determined) firing backwards, to create a backblast cone. This will force realistic use of it, with the operator having to check the blast area first. Thoughts?

I dig it. Though the backwash would need to be safe in case an idiot decides to stand behind it. What would be powering the exhaust? CO2 cartridges?

I wouldn't know how to work the backblast (I'm not a engineer) but I think something like flour or talcum powder might create that sort of effect.

I was planning on using a BB shell, but flour might be safer. I'll keep that in mind.

Flour has the added benefit of antiquing whomever stands behind it.

You might want to steer clear from flour unless it's gluten free. If someone who has a gluten allergy walks behind it that could spell death.

Powdered sugar.

As far as making it go, I'd put two firing bars in, back to back, with a split in the center. The trigger would be connected to a "v" shaped bar. When you press the trigger, it forces the v-bar in between the two firing bars, shoving them outward. They set off both of the 40mm shells at the same time.

I'll look at what cheapest, sugar, flour, or talcum, next time I'm at a store.

I think I'll take your idea Steve, but I'm going to use lengths of bike chain inside a fixed channel instead of bars. That way the linkage from trigger button to shell is never stressed, meaning I don't have to pop it open and fix it every few shots.

Double post for UPDATE. Some of you may have heard me talking about this at Steel Dragon. I now have a lead on a M72 tube unknown variant, for $100 plus shipping (from Vermont). With a little luck, there will be an actual AT weapon to use on the tank.

Just a 40mm system made to look really cool, shouldn't be any more powerful than a 203 or 79. I'll have to find out what shells Blue uses with his 79, they seemed powerful enough without being too much.

Just throwing this out in the open because I noticed that no one had pointed this out. But in my experience most times a 40mm grenade is used it has to be use as a significant upward angle. So a big issue would have to be finding a way to insure that the back facing 40mm shell does not slide out. Just another thing to think about.
