Changes to Media Section

Postby Matt » Sat Apr 14, 2007 5:43 pm

We've started a revamp of our airsoft videos section. Due to the intense need for processing power to push all the streaming video, we've opted to use embedded Google Video instead, as many other sites have. Along with this change comes a few other features, we've setup each of our videos on a separate stand-alone page allowing for comments to be posted on them. They can also be rated. See the Solomon's Pass video as an example if you haven't already.

This means of course, that if you are linking directly to any movie files hosted on the Airsoft Pacific servers, those links are going to be very dead very soon. If you love our videos and would like to link them on your website, my suggestion would be to use the features within Google Video to pull embed code.

Eventually we'll be able to use the same engine to allow you guys to post your own videos as well as articles like reviews. Each article or video can be commented and rated, and allows the user to use HTML and other embedded code that is not allowed in the forums. My plan is to open a media database for people to post their own videos, and also get a reviews database opened up so we can all share our thoughts on various AEG brands and models.

Anyway, check it out, enjoy!

Will this prevent the site from going down so much?

Will we still be able to download future videos in 40 megs of high-res goodness for later viewing, or are we just stuck with the... not-so-high quality of Google Video? (Yeah, yeah, I'm quite aware of the fact that I don't think too highly of the steaming video quality on these sites.)

Yes, my hope is that it will prevent the site from going down as much. Most of our webserver crashes are due to high amounts of traffic, when monitoring the site while videos are streaming... It gets pretty bad.

As for the full large versions, I might make them available for download from an alternate web host. Or find some way to disable streaming so that all you can do is download them.
