Private Message SPAM

Postby Matt » Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:20 pm

Unfortunately we've been receiving a high volume of private message SPAM accounts here on AP. We try to delete them as soon as they are identified and check the new registrations almost daily for accounts that look suspect. Those private messages are deleted when these bogus users are deleted. You might receive email notifications about new private messages when in fact there are no new messages in your box. This is nothing to worry about, it simply means we deleted this user before you checked your PM.

We are working on a fix to block spammers from sending PMs to people, but if you'd rather not receive the private message notifications at all in the meantime, of course you can change that setting by just editing your profile options.

And of course, just like with email security, do not open links or download files sent to you by people you don't know here on AP. Chances are, if you've never heard of them and they're posting a link that has nothing to do with Airsoft, it's a malicious link.

Thanks for bearing with us.

Not trying to revive an old thread, but this caught my attention and I thought I would add my experiences from the midwest to the mix.

There are a few forums that I frequent out here that require new users to post 25 times before they are given the capability to post a PM to anyone, including Mods. This has helped cut back on spam on the site by a huge margin, and not to mention that 24 posts are really inconsequencial in comparison to a normal forum board new member. You really don't get to know anyone in the first 25 posts, so what is there to PM?

Just a thought.

Grayson, every example you listed was very valid, but you're forgetting how temporary of an issue that is. A spammer putting up 25 posts would get banned before they could get to 25 posts (usually). A normal user breaks 25 posts within their first week.

I got it too. It said I was sending malware and then it had a "malware removal website link" I was sure it was another rouge antivirus/anti-malware worm, but it was from a member of the forum that we all know that sent it.
