The Danner Melee; Answer to the Nike SFB?

Postby Matt » Fri Jan 20, 2012 10:40 am

So as many of you may already know, Danner unveiled their new light weight high speed boot, the Melee, at Shot Show 2012. Vaughn and I had a chance to check it out, and being from Portland, we love to see new Danner products.

My first impression - damn this thing is light weight. Unlike some other light weight competitors, the boot holds it's form and feels solid. It seems like something that's going to hold better out in the field, but won't be like walking around with cement blocks on your feet.

I think a lot of Airsofters are going to be interested in it, not only because it's light weight but because it comes in camo patterns we tend to geek out on. We've got Black, multicam, and A-TACS (in July). It's 100% waterproof GORE-TEX for the black boot or mesh lining for the camo patterns. And we're looking at right around $170 on the price tag.

Now, being from Portland we consider that maybe we can get factory seconds, but unfortunately this boot is made in the Vietnam factory. So it's not so likely we're going to see seconds here in Portland. However, we also had a chance to check out another light weight boot, the Rivot, which is produced right here in Portland. That might be a great option for some of you guys looking for a light boot, it's available now in tan and soon to be available in black.

There's getting to be a lot of good light boot options.

My only issue with light boots is that they wear out faster, but since I'm not humping through the Hindu Kush, and a new pair is a mail order away, it doesn't really matter that much.

I can't say I'm a fan of light boots, I prefer the heavier ones. But that's just me, I know plenty of people that like the lighter ones. I'm sure these will be pretty good, plenty of guys swear by Danners boots.

Rockeys have that light boot too, can't remember what its called though...

Does it come in black or just tan?

I was looking at those.

Also, for Oregon, I have found that my danner Ft. Lewis boots in Waterproof can fill with water in our lovely weather.

Waterproof goes both ways. If you're gonna end up in a stream up to your waist, it's better to have boots that can drain out.

This. It's why I won't buy a Gore-Tex boot.

I wear my gortex boots daily. Makes walking around in the pouring rain a non-issue. Yes, if you submerge your foot, you'll get wet. However, utilizing an 8'' boot means you have to be walking through more then 8" of water to get wet. How many of us really walk through that much water?

I hope they're more durable than my $200 Strikers (which were made in China). Within the first year, they were well worn. Not even at the 2-year mark yet and the heel is down to the foam and the tread in the midfoot is almost completely worn away.

Daily wear is different from airsoft wear. I love my Danner Ft. Lewis for wear in heavy pouring rain, when walking or working outside, and especially when it snows.

However, airsoft use is different than daily use. I often get wet up to my knees and thighs when playing airsoft.

Too bad Danner's size wide isn't really a size wide.

I still prefer Altama Ortho-tacx Traction is also a surprisingly good, and they are very light.
