Your role is determined by what you're doing. A shotgun is going to be useless compared to an AEG. The things it benefits from in real life don't really transfer to airsoft. Nobody's afraid of a shotgun racking. It doesn't have a larger blast radius when all 3 rounds are shot from the same barrel, and full auto and even quick trigger semi has no recoil in airsoft. Any round is a kill so the round isn't going to make it more impressive.
It's good because it doesn't break as easily, is cheaper, and looks cool. Everything in airsoft is whether you like playing with it and if it looks cool.
If you want to get into roles, then you have to define them by ranges and ammo capacity. You can't really upgrade shotguns so they're probably something like an "assaulter". You have to get close to be effective. Then as barrels and FPS get longer/higher, you can be further back and be some sort of marksman or Designated Marksman, with your DMR.
Anything with a drum is capable of sustained fire and would be a support weapon, suppressing enemy positions to fix them in one spot or hinder their movement, so you can outmaneuver them and also keep their heads down while your assaulters get close enough to either clear them out with rounds, or throw pea grenades if you have them.
