RECON teams would carry it to spread behind them when the PAVN had tracking dogs with them , it kills the scent glands in a dogs nose .

Do you have any pictures of your total loadout in comparison to a real shot of the period?

The STABO harness is a nice touch. Did they wear those regularly in the jungle, or just before and after pickups?

STABO was part of the gear , they wore it all the time , during extractions you hook the leg straps to the front of the harness and you are ready to go.

NOT to argue, but there was more than cayenne in that container. While the other contents are not going to be discussed by me (as they are current TTP), you take your chances using only cayenne. It renders some dogs worthless, and has no effect on others.

It's a nice loadout. I wish I had kept my slant pockets. They went out of issue about a week before I graduated from ITS. Guys who had them after the changeover would wear them to bullshit formations like division change of command and whatnot. I think I finally had to throw out my last set in 1994... they were more repair than they were fabric :)

Yes there was more in the container than just cayenne , but like you said there's no need to give out the entire formula for it in an open forum.

Actually STABO rigs are an Army thing, Marines only used them until 69-ish. Marines developed SPIE rigs in 69 and then adopted them officially in 1970. Also Marines very rarely wore tiger stripe fatigues. The more common tiger stripe worn was Vietnamese Sea Weave tiger stripe worn by USMC Advisors attached to VNMC units. Advisors were most prevalent in early-war and late-war. There were not a ton mid-conflict.

Also the M56 Suspenders were 41 suspenders with added 56 suspender pads. Also they wore M61 belts, not M56s. While yes some Marines did trade or steal 56 gear, this was very rare. Because of the belt differences, most Marines used issued canteen covers that used the M1910 hooks, which attached to the 61 belt.

The list of gear was approved by various members of RECON teams from the war which i have been in contact with . STABOs where used often by them as well as M56 gear , the only difference between Marines M61 belts and Army M56 belts is on the attachment points for the M61 single magazine pouch , tiger stripes where also used by RECON teams until ERDL camo was adopted , there was also a mix of camo and OG uniforms used. Sea Wave was the first type of TS camo developed by the South Vietnamese Marines in the 50s this was later copied by the ARVN wich produced many variations of the pattern , all of wich where used by the RECON teams.
