Questions on Comms

I am looking to do reconnaissance, I am wondering what would be a good radio and mic set up? Should I get one that is waterproof?

I've never paid attention to whether or not radios are waterproof and never had problems with them in rain. However I've never been up to my neck in water at an event.

Do most teams use them?

They are used more often at OP events than skirmishes. Definitely not a requirement, but a good thing to have, especially if you want to do recon. If your CO has no way to communicate, your recon won't be very effective.

Lots of radios are water resistant, which I definitely recommend if you are planning on playing in very wet weather. Midland radios are very good, and are fairly inexpensive on amazon.com.

Comms are the most volitile thing in airsoft. Very rarely have I been to a game where comms work all day. Either someone gets pissed off at the idiot hot miking and calling for help by "that one tree with the green leaves".

Comms are important, but pretty low on the gear totem pole. Before investing in a radio, make sure you have spare: eye pro ( easy stuff to lose and the most important part if your kit), batteries and mags.

After that's done, I'd look into a midland set. You can get a pack of 2 with a recharging station for about $60 on ebay last I looked. They work great for airsoft and you can't beat the price.

Also, if you're running a plate carrier, or some other setup, be sure to keep your radio accessible. Having it on your back is a bad idea as you always need someone to adjust the volume/change the channel for you.

For a throat mic, though, you need a nice one or it just sounds like shit.

The best cheap earbud headset I have had . It outlasted most other earbuds I have owned, and stays comfortable in my ear.

A $12 hand mic worked just fine for me. I haven't been too impressed with the build quality of the clone headsets to suggest one.
