Losing teeth?

Airsoft safety discussion. Post here with questions about laws and safety concerns.

For years I thought I could just keep my mouth closed and that my teeth didn't show. For years that worked. One day that bb found me though. A random shot through the brush can get you, your matrix skills won't save you. When you're not expecting the shot your mouth is not in "battle position".

In hindsight I would have rather worn something for years to keep the tooth, even after the bill and the fix they don't come back like the original. If you're not wearing something over your mouth now, you will be after you lose your first tooth.

I'd probably do the mesh mask thing but I can't stand mouth guards that make it hard to talk. So far I consider myself lucky. I did catch a BB in my mouth once, spit it back out and kept shooting.

Joking or sarcasm aside if you purposely aim to knock teeth out and cause pain you are in the wrong sport. If we want to grow OUR sport avoid this at all costs. I'd rather have 30 more players than a headshot any day. No one and I mean NO ONE in their right mind wants to lose a tooth to this game and while sh!t does happen time to time we should not aggravate the situation with people who purposely aim to maim.

Now devils advocate here, snipers usually will take any shot they can, sometimes its just a head, arm, leg etc. However I urge the snipers out there to take shots in the torso, A it gives you a better strike surface because even airsoft sniper rifles are inaccurate at long distances and B the chance of knocking teeth out is diminished greatly.

If I remember correctly we have a rule in place just for this reason, DONT SHOOT AT WHAT YOU CANT SEE. Blind firing is a major cause of dental damage.

Now some people dont want to wear mouth guards. I dont and Ive been hit in the lip many times, usually at far distances. I dont want to hear any of this "Well he should've wore a mouth guard BS." If you dont feel bad after shooting ANYONE'S tooth out excuse me but you are a straight a$$, period. I dont care if you are a friend of mine or not. Causing permanent damage to someones appearance is unacceptable and should not be made a joke out of, EVER.

I was hoping you would take it as a joke and not a bashing thing.

The answer is painfully simple. If you do not wish your teeth, and or tooth, shot out because you were playing airsoft; if you are not interested in paying the exorbitant funds needed to replace said tooth, or simply do not wish to appear as a tooth-less simpleton - wear mouth protection. I wear the bitterend mesh mask and love it, Andy: a.k.a.- Hard Drive wears the Iron Face, and he likes that. There are alternatives; of course, evike.com, ehobbyasia.com, and ebaybanned.com all sell steel mesh masks for half the price of the bitterend.

Then there's option two, do not wear mouth protection - and risk having one, or all of your teeth shot out. The choice is, and always has been, yours. As stated, in another thread regarding mouth protection, I personally have seen two separate players get teeth SHOT OUT at two separate games.

Fight hard. Fight safe. Fight strong. Fight with honor.

Best regards,

Kevin: a.k.a.- Book

p.s. As if you need any more reason to protect your teeth... let's say, for argument's sake, that a lost tooth costs upwards of 1,000 - 2,000 dollars to replace. Think of all the airsoft swag you can acquire with 1,000, or even 2,000 dollars!
If'n you ain't diein'... you ain't tryin'.

Mouth guards are annoying and uncomfortable. Salivating into a plastic dish in my mouth all day is not pleasant for me.

I similarly find face masks of any kind to be both uncomfortable and dorky.

I've been airsofting regularly for the better part of five years now, including almost weekly CQC training, and all I wear are shooting glasses. Thus far I've not had any incidents with my teeth getting shot at/out. For me, the constant discomfort and encumbrance of facial/mouth protection is not worth bearing in relation to the relatively low risk of a damaging oral injury. Your mileage may vary.

couple guys on our forums, had there dentist make them a "special" mouth guard. From the one time i looked at one of them, it looks like tho's clear braces, that just click over your teeth.

Both of the guys say they hate mouth guards.. I guess these are different, and allow you to talk, and breath without drooling all over you self..

i dont know what they call them.. though
ill talk to them this weekend and get a name of them

Yes, It is uncomfortable at times to wear a mask when airsofting. I also play hockey and wear a full cage over my face just in case a puck hits me there. I have never been hit in the face with a puck but I’m not going to take that chance. I have, however, been hit in the facemask many times by BBs. I also hadn’t ever taken a shot to the balls in my first 2 years of playing hockey. The first time I blocked a shot on goal and took it in the balls as opposed to a shin I was glad I was wearing a cup.
When I was a kid my parents spent way too much money to make my teeth straight for one of them to be shot out by a .2g BB. A year and a half ago I had to have a tooth replaced (for non-airsoft reasons) with a screw in my jaw with a fake tooth put on top. Total cost was $2000 (That’s a discounted price since I know a guy who sells the implants) out of my pocket, and I have good insurance. It took a year for the whole process and it was not the most pleasant experience.
Yes, I realize I may not look like the toughest guy on the field when wearing a full mask. I might even look like a dork. I’d rather look a bit like a dork with a $15 mask on my face and be slightly uncomfortable than spend $2000 on replacing another tooth.

If you're not smiling while airsofting, you're doing something wrong. :)

I also never smile while airsofting - also, if I have to yell orders or information, I tilt my head down to where I'm nearly yelling at the ground - I'd rather take a bb to the top of my dome.
I cant wear a mouthguard because of chronic sinusitis - too many allergies for too long has made me a mouth breather most of the time. If I hear a string of shots, most of the time I will dip my head down to take them in the skull unless I've been caught off guard, which thankfully - hasnt been many times.
I've taken a gas shotgun blast to the face, too many headshots to count including frontal and overhead shots, and zingers to the face and thankfully I haven't had a single tooth shaken by the experience in 9 years. (of course, now that I've said something...)

As far as snipers taking headshots - As a sniper on the field, I personally HATE taking head shots. I mean, truly HATE it. By experience it hurts, pisses you off, and can make a fun day go sour.
I always try to take a secondary shot for a leg, something sticking out, etc - but if the guy I'm aiming at keeps poking just his head out then I'll yell at him once - "You keep poking that head out, I'm gonna take it!", if he keeps going, well then it's outta my hands.
Yea, it's mil-sim and I try to stay all badass in character and shit - but overall I wanna have a fun day at what I'm doing and like to hear other people are too.
