optics water proof?

Postby Shadow-Thief » Mon Mar 29, 2010 3:52 pm

My friend bought a 90$ halo site, but he's afraid to use it when it rains because he isnt sure if its water proof or not.

Should the RDS say water proof or not? I know they go anywhere from
25$-400$

Some will say waterproof, but I personally have never had any form of optics fail due to rain. Just let it dry out properly before you store it and you shouldn't have too many problems.

First of all it is not an "Halo site" but a Holographic sight. I'd better go safe then sorry and asume that the sight cannot hold excessive amounts of water. I assume a light drizzle should not harm it but if it actually start to rain it might cause extensive damage.
It is a clone after all. Some might work great other won't. It would help if you could give us a brand.

many real scopes etc fail when exposed to moisture and heat.....they fog. Generally the only scopes that are actually fog proof are usually high end leupold , Nikon etc.... the $500 + range. These optics are usually gas purged and filled. Avoid water as much as possible with the lower end stuff. I have had cheapies (RS) go for years with no trouble but some others on the first wet hunting trip fog up......a royal pain.

I've had optics fog up and be impossible to use in wet conditions, but then returned to normal after being dried out. RS acogs (plus similar quality glass) and iron sights are pretty much the only infallible optics. The real question is can he afford to replace/ do without should something happen to it, and if not; why would he buy something he isn't willing to use?

My Ebaybanned eotech clone gets temperamental when it gets wet. Sometimes it doesn't turn off, sometimes it won't turn on. I just have to disassemble it and dry it out. It's recently had issues so I had to solder the on button so when batteries are in, it's on. I like it other then the issues I've had with it.
