How necessary is a spring guide? one of the 2 tabs of mine broke off and i am not too excited about spending $15 on a new one.

Um...pretty necessary. Don't know of the exact ramifications if there is none, but lets just assume there is a reason for it. If your lucky you might be able to find one on here for cheap.

Spend the money once, and you shouldn't* cry again.

*I say shouldn't because there are random acts of a non-human nature that will cause everything to go completely backwards. I have never seen a broken spring guide/heard of it, but still, it could happen.

If you didn't need one, they wouldn't put one in the GB.

15 bucks is nothing compared to your whole GB assploding.

The spring guide keeps the spring from bending upon compression in the gearbox as it cycles. In conjunction with the hollow part of the piston, it contains the spring linearly to have the gearbox rely on its structural integrity rather than its screws.

You skimp on the spring guide, you run having the spring bend out the side of the gearbox, push a piston out of line, etc. It won't necessarily affect your shooting performance until something like these happens from not having it.
