Well you can break in your motor brushes by running two AA batteries in series before putting in in the replica. Just run them until they are dead. If you plan on using a lipo this little trick will allow your motor to run a little longer. However it is hardly worth the time to help your AEG motor to last a few weeks longer.
Like all motors, they are an inductive load and require a second or so to become a resistive load. When the motor is in the inductive state it is hell in it and your battery. So if you want to baby your motor use full auto more than semi auto. Done throwing useless info

Found this:

Don't know if you want to try it, somehow puting a motor in water just doesn't sound good to me, but I know next to nothing about electrical motors.

The only thing that needs to be broken-in are the brushes and they usually come prebroken-in from the factory. It's only when you replace the brushes do you need to break them in.

As for maintenance cleaning the commutator of carbon deposits left behind from the brushes can increase performance quite a bit.

To clean the Commutator, use 600 grit or finer sand paper to removes the chips and carbon deposits off.
