That's basically it. I'm trying to resolve an argument between my friends and this is a big part of it.

Pot metal.

Basically there's zinc, aluminum and some other junk in it, can't remember what else.

This surprises me very much...I always thought they were like aluminum or steel or something like that. Are any AEG's made out of something that is not pot metal?

Some of the DBoys line AKs are steel, Real Sword is steel, I'm sure the list goes on, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

"There is no scientific metallurgical standard for pot metal; common metals in pot metal include zinc, lead, copper, tin, magnesium, aluminium, iron, and cadmium. The primary advantage of pot metal is that it is quick and easy to cast. Due to its low melting temperature no sophisticated foundry equipment is needed and specialized molds are not necessary."

While you are correct, the academic in me says that if you are going to quote a source, you should also cite it (wiki, right?).

"Steel" is a very broad term. The great majority of AEG parts are cast of low quality steel or iron and stamped sheet metal. You will also see cast aluminum that is machined, like some of the rail sets you can find. And lot of different types plastics of course. It really just depends on the manufacturer. You can not really use a broad term to cover all AEGs.

When I say "low quality" cast iron or steel, that means that it is not very hard or strong. To add toughness, strength or hardness requires more expensive materials to be used in the casting mix, and will add cost to machining as well.

Unless you see that the part is machined out of billet material, it is not "steel" as most people think of it. That is expensive, which is why you will not see that very often in AEGs. So keep in mind that "All Steel" may not actually mean when you think it means, even if it is technically true.
