dmr platform

Postby Toan » Thu Jan 20, 2011 8:33 pm

i want to build a dmr, i want to choose an m14 as my platform to build on. but would it be a waste to get a soc16 to build upon or is it too short to be useful as a dmr? i would obviously get a long suppressor and fill it with the inner barrel to the end, but even then would that still be long enough to compete with the already long regular m14?

any suggestions would really be helpful, im looking to spend ~250 on just the base gun itself, but obviously the cheaper the better.

i know alot of you guys on here have m14s so id like to hear all the input that you guys can offer.

The longer the barrel is, the more accurate your gun will be unless it has pits or deformities. I think you will get tired of wielding a huge M14, but yes, the M14 is a great classic to fill the DMR qualifications.

so the soc16 would be fine? even with the suppressor it should have a decent length to put in a longer inner barrel correct?

The difference in barrel length from the SOC16 to the full length M14 isn't a significant one. I think it's 460mm vs. 500mm? At that point, I would just go with whichever one you like the looks and maneuverability of more than the other.

Be careful with the longer outer barrel; at a certain point you stop seeing significant improvement and you're just negatively impacting your maneuverability in the brush. For example, a 509mm barrel performs pretty much exactly the same as a 590mm. Once you get past about 470mm, the improvements are marginal. You'll see much better improvements with a higher quality tightbore than with a medium quality tightbore of greater length.

Also, a full length M14 is only marginally heavier than a SOC16. Having handled both extensively, I can say this with a certain measure of confidence.

I have owned a full-length Cyma M14 and loved it. My brother has a SOC16 and he loves it; the thing is a tack driver out of the box, and is quiet too. That will start you off a little under-budget and will allow you to spend money on important upgrades for a DMR-type replica.

I just finished a SOCOM14 DMR that I bought from Pickles. After cleaning out the sand (wth?) I put in a M125 spring and JBU601 tight bore. Cleaned and greased everything.

It chronos right at 445 +- 3 with 0.2s.

Took off the selector switch and changed out the top handguard. At 70 feet it is dead accurate, I'll have it at santas secret war for the first time, running with 0.3s and midcaps. It is heavy compared to a M4, do your pushups...

thanks for all the replies, i was thinking about the g&g but i read that the threads are greater than 14mm. but since bush killer said the difference in length isnt that big, i could probably live without having to lengthen the inner barrel but instead just swap out with a high quality tight bore.
