Batteries... Why so large?

Discuss battery powered AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns) in this forum.

I know one of the reasons that I had such a large battery at the beginning of my airsoft career was because I just reconfigured the cells that I had for hobby grade R/C cars. The batteries in cars are pretty crazy, and I think if I were ever to get a LiPo for airsoft it would be something like this, just so that I would be able to fit it in my full stock, and throw it in the ol' rustler.

5000mah LiPo!!! Haha. You would really use that for airsoft? Awesome.
Yeah Nasty, gotta have a shell ejecting model that spits out the perfectly weighted fake shells.

All batteries have internal resistance, R. A 1000 mah battery has approximately 2x the internal resistance of a 2000 mah battery.

The power consumed in the battery itself is I*I*R. This is power that heats up the battery and is lost. It is why your batteries get hot when you hold the trigger down like an idiot.

Lower R in the battery is better. A lower R provides a higher voltage at the motor. Lipos have inherently lower R than nicads, so they are transfering more of the power to the load (motor) than just burning it in the battery.

Conclusion: A 8.4v 2000 mah battery will deliver more power to the motor than a 8.4v 1000 mah battery. A 1000 mah lipo delivers more power to the motor than a 1000 mah nicad.

I use this battery in my SAW or in my m4, m 16 ( full stock) , mp5sd2 or what ever gun it will fit. I prefer guns with full stocks to accommodative this size of battery for this reason. The gun(s) will run for an entire day. There is no carrying of extra batteries, no changing in the field, I do not have to worry about bringing along an charger/ inverter etc. My personal choice, but during almost every event I have been to there is some guy going around with his discharged mini battery in his hand stating " any one have a spare battery"? I have not gone the lipo battery route yet. Probably because I have so many nicad s and charging systems. It does limit me somewhat in cool looking guns with hi tech stocks, but I'm a function over form kind of person. Probaly why I like Glocks over other pistol types, but thats on another thread! :D

Hey thanks Phiz. That's a lot of good knowledge you have.
And DJ, the functionality part is understandable. I can respect Glock people.
