Am i Li-po ready?

Postby CCCman » Tue Mar 01, 2011 7:39 pm

I plan on using li-po batteries now, and i wanted to make sure my current set up will be able to handle it.
I am using modify 8mm bushings, g&p m120 motor, matrix m110 spring, g&p shims, and matrix standard torque steel gears.

Also, i never fire full auto, I always fire on semi, the only time i use auto is when someone wants to know my rof.

Should my gearbox be able to with stand a li-po?

Well, I am not the guy to tell you whether your gun can handle lipo or not, but I will give you some advice on the lipos themselves.

Be careful. Seriously. Lipos are an awesome battery technology, but they have to be treated with proper care, otherwise you can really hurt yourself and do serious property damage. I would assume that since you have decided to go the lipo route, you have done the required research on them, right? These have some characteristics that are much different than Nimh packs, so don't take them for granted.

1) Use a proper lipo charger. These batteries take a special kind of charger, and it really should be one that balances too.

2) Never over discharge and never over charge. These are keys here. Over charging can cause a fire or explosion, hence the injury and property damage, and over discharging can ruin the pack.

3) Take care of the pack. Don't dent or puncture the pack. Again, this can cause a fire or explosion. Nimhs you can pretty much toss on the ground. These you can't.

4) Back to charging.....Charge the lipo pack at the proper charge rate. Depending on the charger you have, this may be adjustable. If you charge it at too high of a rate, you may be in for trouble with damage to the pack, or again, fire and explosion. To know the charge rate for your pack, it is either provided by the maufacturer or retailer, or use the formula of 1c (1 times the capacity). So, you have a 2000mah pack let's say. You would then charge it at 2 amps. Some newer lipo cells allow for a higher charge rate, but I still use that formula because I am never in a hurry to charge my packs.

So, there is my input into your questions. Sorry, I know it doesn't help you with your gun, but I always want to make sure people understand what they are getting into with lipos. Again, they are awesome tech, but need to be understood and respected. No offense to you specifically, but I have seen many young guys jump into lipos and end up with real issues because they don't learn what they need to before getting them. But, if you've done your homework, you should be good to go. Good luck!

My KWA, which is lipo ready, has essentially the same setup as yours, just everything is made by kwa. A big thing you forgot is the type of piston you are using and the gearbox shell. Eventually the gearbox shell will need to be replaced, like all V2 gearboxes that use lipos, assuming you are using a V2 gearbox. This is info really only helpful for users who use full auto though.

If your juts using semi, your gn is defiantly ready. It's not like the lipo is going to make your gun shoot harder. The lipo will increase rof also, which is nice.

Also wire your gun to deans. This will allow for the electricity to more easily flow in the connections, thus increasing the amount of energy your battery can pump into the motor.

Nice setup! I know the parts listed would certainly be able to handle it, but do you have a proper wire set for the Li-Poly?
There is some great info on Li-Poly batteries in this thread; hope it helps.

High speed motor + 11.1v Lipo + M110 spring may yield faster wear on internal parts when firing on full-auto. Since you only fire on semi-auto I say your setup is fine.

On the other hand, if I wanted to do high ROF with the same setup as yours I would replace the spring to M100 - the setup will yield lower FPS but high ROF. Thats just me...

You mentioned you have aftermarket gears in there. Before you run a LiPo, I would make sure those are shimmed properly so that they don't fly apart.

Another thing: since you're running standard gears, and all you want is faster trigger response (or at least I would assume so, since you want to get a LiPo), a set of high torque gears might be a better investment, seeing as you only shoot on semi.

I would suggest getting a LiPo from Airsoft Outlet NW. They sell them for dirt cheap and they are only the best in quality... Plus, you get to support the local guys! ;)

Every gun is technically "LiPo ready". It's just a marketing scheme they use to entice people to buy. Don't get me wrong KWA's are alright, they just aren't worth the money. Kinda like the apple of airsoft. Great if you just want to shoot it, but they make proprietary parts that don't work well with all the other goodies on the market and they aren't the "Best" thing out there

DBoys are definitely *not* lipo ready. You don't know what the word "screech" means until a gearbox dies. That said, if it's got that nice of stuff inside and you're only firing in semi there shouldn't be any issues. It's extended firing at high torque or fire rate that kills weak gearboxes, and it doesn't sound like yours is.

With a decent re-shim and re-greasing a DBoys will hold out for longer then you'd think. While I understand what you are saying, the point of my post was to point out that the voltage of your battery does not correlate to increased stress on the gearbox. It only accelerates the eventual failure of parts. That is assuming of course you have decent shimming skills and can correct the piston engagement
