Bearings or bushings for an upgrade?

Postby Payback » Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:01 pm

I have a dboys MK-16 scar, and reading up on it i find that it has the 7mm nylon bushings in it. I would like to replace these with metal. But are metal bushings what i would want, or are the 7mm metal ball bearings overkill for a stock gun? Eventually i'll probably upgrade more stuff, but for now just bushings/bearings and shims.

Or do you think the nylon bushings are good enough?

Any other suggestions for this gun in particular would help, hopup? not sure i really need anything else done tho.

As long as you don't want it to run at extremely high speeds, then you should be fine for a while. The bushings will take stress off the rest of your GB, and make it a lot lest noisy.
Hop-up is also a high-value upgrade.

In My opinion (what I go for on my replicas)

Bushings and Shims>Hop Up>Decent Batteries>Air Nozzle>TBB>piston/piston head>motor

Go with the ball bearings...

id get the bearings, but dont skimp on them. get a good set, the cheaper crappy ones sometimes come apart under heavy use.

bearings will usually increase your rate of fire, as well as your battery efficiency. when properly shimmed, they make your gun run signifigantly smoother. if you have nylon bushings right now and your gun is shooting near 400fps, then at least get something metal, be it bearings or bushings. after time, those nylon ones will wear and when they do you are probably going to lose one or more gears when they start spinning off-axis and bind up when under power.

like switchback said, hopup parts are another excellent upgrade. id start with a new bucking, and use heavy ammo (0.25g or higher) if you arent already.

I was looking at a set of Classic Army ball bearing bushings on AONW, They also have the metal bushings there too. I'm not really sure what the fps of my gun is now, but i assume its below 400.

Knowing the dboys, id guess its between 375 and 415 or so. If it were me, I would go with the bearings. The bushings should work too though. Just get something other than nylon.

IIRC, the last Dboys SCAR I had apart had metal bushings, possibly even bearings. But it's been 6+ months since I did that...

Well, i went on your recommendation dboys, i hope they have metal bushings. I'm only going by the reviews i see online and videos of them taking the gearbox apart.

I think i'll pop it open first and see, then order bearings if i need to.
