Does FPS effect this?

Postby Icepick » Sat Mar 26, 2011 2:14 pm

My gun shoots fairly straight, but after a certain distance the BBs just kind of drop straight down. And I've also noticed that the distance a BB will "fly" as opposed to the others is fairly large... So is this just an accuracy issue? Or does this have to do with how powerful the gun is? The fps should be around 270-320. (Haven't chronoed it after I replaced some parts, worked on compression, etc.)

I'm awful at judging distances, but I did put in a new Madbull Blue bucking and nub and it seemed to be able to push the BBs out a little farther and more accurately. It also eliminated the ridiculous "fly" distance of those BBs that like to go left/right every so often.

Is the average range of an AK47 ~100ft.? I don't know why, but it just doesn't feel like it is performing 100%... Maybe I'm just expecting too much...

What?

Most Airsoft guns are almost identical in range...

Ah the intricacies of ballistics! In addition to all of the mechanical (gun issues) listed by these fine gentlemen above, you have basic ballistics (or lack thereof) to deal with. A spherical ball of various weights being driven down an unrifled barrel. An actual bullet fired from an unrifled barrel will do some of the same things you are describing and more. Air soft is an inherently inaccurate system. I'm constantly amazed by what some folks can get from their air soft guns. Barrel length, bb weight, fps, barrel diameter , etc... can all effect what you are getting range wise. you are dealing with a very light projectile being driven by pneumatics. The projectile being so light is greatly effected by external forces, wind, gravity etc...
I guess short version is, do not expect too much from what is a limited operating system. Go find a tape measure , set up a known distance range, and get someoe to chrono your gun. When you remove some of the variables you can begin to figure out if you have a gun issue or whatever. Many of the fine gentlemen here on AP will give you much advice on how to soup up your gun if it is warranted after you diagnose if there is an issue.

Use heavier bb's. Once you use really heavy ones, that's when FPS starts to matter.

Next upgrade on my list is probably going to be a new barrel. Is it worth it to get a 6.01 over a 6.03?
