Ares TAR 21 help

Postby Mongrol » Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:16 pm

Im buying my friends tar and have been looking at some reviews on the web. I have seen some that say 380 with .2s at 20rps (did not specify battery) Then another website said 330 with .2s and 19 rps with a 11.1v lipo? Then lastly one says 310 with .2s and 18 rps with a 9.6v.

Anybody know what it really is? Also pros and cons of the tar if you can
Thanks

It's just gonna depend on the spring, springs are pretty cheap so I wouldn’t get hung up on the FPS and ROF. Even the diameter and precision of the BBs used can have a 20 fps difference on chrono results.
And yeah, the ROF is gonna be right around 20ish with an 11.1V LiPo, if you’ve watched vids of it shooting you’ll see. Most nicer guns are around that speed (with an 11.1) these days.

I can't say if I'd trust the gearbox or not since Ares has made plastic teeth before.

I do believe that gun comes with a tightbore. I probably cant tell you much if youve already read up on the gun though.

An obvious benefit is that it accepts STANAG (M4) mags.

I highly recommend the dark earth (longer, railed, not black, and lacking the sucky a$$ MARs sight).

If he has the one with the sucky a$$ MARs sight, I'd avoid it unless the price is right. You’ll be stuck with that optic and I’ve heard the lack of brightness makes shooting tricky, it's just cheap quality on an otherwise pretty cool gun.

One con might include the looks, like something from Halo. But you probably don’t mind since you’re checkin’ out the gun. I used to want one. Could be pretty darn cool.

Of course, ask him and yourself why he’s selling it. If he has any ulterior interests, you don’t want to jeopardize your friendship by buying a gun that’s not desirable for some reason and becomes a bone of contention between the two of you. Despite that, lots of people have had good things happen when buying/selling with friends.

Can I ask how much he’s charging you? A disadvantage that’s always plagued me is that there are other guns I would prefer for the price. I’ve never held one, but in images the gun doesn’t appear super rigid? Hard to tell..

So even with the MARs, the little shine-out laser dot seems handy for the drops on close targets. I will tell you the quick-change spring is a HUGE advantage, swapping for CQB or whatever makes life massively better than with a version 2 gearbox.

Finally, it’s a bullpup. Small, quick, but holding a pretty long barrel. It’s a relatively unique design, so that’s good if you like people oogling at what you have. There’s usually controversy with those fashions though; many bullpups are an acquired taste.

Go with your gut. You might hate yourself for it later, but you’ll probably learn something, good or bad.

Oh one benefit, it’s wrapped in nice Styrofoam. Assuming he kept the box. That always make me happy.

Its the tan one without the MARS sight or laser. We settled on $200 for the TAR with a 9.6v and 3 75 round pmags
