G&G M14 problems

Postby G36 FTW » Sun Apr 24, 2011 7:52 pm

Alright, well after letting my M14 sit on my gun wall for weeks with no action I decided to shoot some targets in my back yard. I grabbed my G&G M14, aimed at the nearest can, and, a horrible whizzing noise ensued.

After removing the gearbox, I noticed the piston was locked back, and thus assumed that the anti-reversal latch was engaged. I opened it, took the gears, piston and cylender out, didn't notice any wear and reassembled it. It still made the whizzing sound.

So, I tried adjusting the motor height, and while doing so noticed that the bevel gear was the only gear spinning. I again disassembled the gearbox and found no broken gear or piston teeth.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? When I have the gearbox open the gears mesh and spin fine, but when assembled the bevel gear is the only one that is noticeably spinning; its almost as if the teeth aren't meshing (bad shimming?)

Any help is much appreciated.

EDIT: This is the first time this gearbox has been opened, it is all stock.

Sounds like the pinion (?) gear is stripped on the inside. Or the set screw (assuming it has one) has backed off and isn't holding the motor axle.

Is the set screw the same as the motor adjustment screw?

And the pinion gear seems to be well attached to the motor shaft, it doesn't have any up or down play.

Well, after messing with the gears with the gearbox open, part of the bevel gear had become separated from the axle (the smaller part that meshes with the sector gear). It won't freely spin (which is why the gears still work while the gearbox is open) but it gives with enough force.

Odd, since I've only heard of earlier G&P gears doing this, but I guess there is a first time for everything.
