Charging Deans With Mini Aligator Clips

Postby Switchback » Tue Jun 21, 2011 8:20 pm

So, I have a Deans battery and a large tamiya charger. I acquired an adapter quite some time ago, and am now in need of its services.
Do I have this set up correctly?

Aligator clips make contact with the metal in the connector AND the plastic cover. With this damage the red plastic?

i wouldn't suggest doing it unless its an emergency because the leads have a higher chance of shorting

and yes it probably will damage the plastic

I don't know about long term use if it will damage the plastic, but I used the same setup to charge some batteries for a friend and it worked fine with no apparent damage done to the plastic. Just make sure to keep the clips from touching each other while they are charging.

As long as the Deans are installed on the right polarity and the Aligator clips are NOT going to touch each other. I don't see a problem.

The red plastic is an insulator it can not conduct electricity.

Won't hurt it at all. The clips aren't strong enough to mash the plastic, and they're not getting hot or conducting anything or arcing across the plastic.

I've charged many batteries repeatedly with those clips.

It would be easier to just make an adaptor (it should have come with a large to small) here is what I made just make sure you have the right polarity

Note: if your just running Deans you can remove large tamiaya plug and put a male deans on there too.

Switchback, if it's a lipo, some chargers work differently. Some chargers balance the lipo and charge through the white align port. Other chargers charge through the main plug and only balance through the align port.

I think he meant that you need the other plug connected to properly balance a lipo.
