On choosing an M4

Postby Tankwitch » Tue Jul 03, 2012 5:03 pm

Hello AP, I have been thinking about getting an M4 platform and knew there where far too many options. SO I said to my self I'll take a quick look around and see what I can find. After looking around I have come to these two options. I have little experience in choosing a quailty M4, but I do know that these are good quality brands. My search and knowledge on this subject is far from complete, so I would like to ask you some questions:

Of these two which one would you prefer?
Are there any other makes/models that you would recomend?
The first AEG requires the use of a buffer tube lipoly, what size and discharge rate is best?
Late edit: Or should I just wait for that new magpul PDW that should be coming out some time this month or next month?

KWAs are good. They have issues with mags, that's about it.
I hear good and bad things about G&P. I've never owned one or used one for any period of time so I have no opinion.

I would also keep in mind Classic Army.
I actually used a Classic Army M4 this past Sunday that was like 4+ years old and it ran great, I felt better than the less than a year old KWA I used Saturday.

Both are quality guns. If you go with the KWA, get it from a US dealer if you want a warranty.

You should be good to go if you stick with an 11.1/15C or less Lipo battery. A 7.4v Lipo will be easier on the internals, but the ROF may be weak.

I've heard about KWA's mag problem. I did some checking and my mags are fully combatable. I've heard that CA quality varies greatly. So I will take a look at them and see if I can find something that I like.

If I plan on using a lipo I only plan on using a 7.4 as 11.1 shreds gearboxes.

I wouldn't be too worried putting an 11.1 lipo in todays newer guns that were built for them. It is not like it would void your warranty.

I loved my Tokyo Marui SOPMOD, it had recoil, a functioning bolt catch, and was very accurate with the only downside is that they're pretty expensive ($500-550 shipped).

I've been absolutely beating the living tar out of my Socom Gear DDM4 ver. 1. I got it used, bone stock, and have run it to Hell and back. Not one single problem that wasn't caused by my own idiocy. Mud, water, 10,000 rounds, all fine. Decent RoF on a 9.6v NiMh battery (SG recommends a 11.1v LiPo), and I've never had magazine issues with it.

Damn fine rifle, even having used other people's. I'm not going back- Socom Gear makes a good AEG. While the model I have in particular was limited to 400 pieces (and thus is basically impossible to find), Socom Gear makes many AEGs. If you'll be at the game on Saturday, you can try mine.

Cheers.

I've had 3 Classic Army blasters over my course in airsofting.

Quality weapons. The first one was a MP5k-PDW that had it's safety malfunction. Sent it back to AONW, and didn't get it fixed, as the part never surfaced. They took it as a part gun, and gave me a new one. That one has been going strong ever since. The 3rd one I have is the AR-10. Very nice. CNC'd handguard (very sharp!) and a very nice body to boot. Be careful though, as Classic Army guns tend to use weird magwells, and occasionally they don't take some mags aswell as others. I recommend always going to a storefront to see if mags will fit and feed.

The Magpul PDR looks pretty sweet, but it seems as it's more for a CQB weapon. I've yet to see any range tests, so I'd be wary of the range of it.

There's a point where this needs to stop, and we've clearly passed it

Personally I like my G&G, but KWA is always a really good choice, as stated above me though. They do have mag problems.
