Question about steel gears

Postby Alien_Hunter » Fri Mar 22, 2013 2:15 pm

Hey all I've got a STAR M16a4. It's a sweet gun but uses kind of a wierd gearbox. It's basically Marui components. So my question is: If you were going to run an M120, would you add steel gears?

I haven't cracked into the gearbox but the piston is polycarb, good spring guide, but the gears are XYT brand according to other sources. Without a complete overhaul, would steel gears handle the 120 better? The Gearbox sounds pretty smooth with the non linear M120 in it, almost better than the stock one that was 330 fps I believe.

PS it's got a metal gearbox not the wierd polycarb GB's they used to use. I use .25's and use a brand name 8.4v

XYT gears will be more than sufficient.

Steel gears will handle the m120 easily, and you get the added bonus of increased reliability too. You may want to consider your ratio choices as well if you intend to go with a stiffer spring, and a piston with full metal teeth would be a good thing to drop in while your there, more reliable than plastic teeth.
When in doubt, empty the mag.

I'd fiddle with the compression before you try increasing the spring tension. Randal (Renagade) worked some hoodoo on my TM P90 and got it shooting 400 with an M100.

right right.

A legit m120 is likely to put you over 400FPS which will make your gun illegal in 99% of outdoor fields in Oregon.
Personally I would stick with a m110 and focus on other performance upgrades such as your barrel and hop up.
my AR shoots about 320 with .25s and I can shoot 50 yards accurately, which is more than enough in airsoft. People who tell you their AEG shoots 100 yards accurately are lying to you.

Ah. Dat P90.

Dee's tightbore and a good mechbox design were most likely the cause of that. ;)

Normally I recommend a M110 spring for the 400 FPS area with a 6.03 tightbore.

The gun shoots perfectly and after my luck with 3-consecutive Dboy duds I'd like to keep it mostly stock, not make a $300 aeg an even bigger money pit. I may just get an m110. I do kick myself for buying a gun with an irregular gearbox but it feels so good in my hands I've got find clean underwear after I hold it. STAR did some really top-notch finishing on it. The hop-up is also a work of art. I put some .25s in it and my team as my witness they sailed flat for a few hundred feet.

xyt gears are steel gears and will handle an m120 without any problems. of course that is if you realy do have xyt gears in there. just cause someone says thats what was in one they know about doesnt mean that thats what is in yours.
if you do decide to go with aftermarket gears shs, core, or zci are great low cost gears. of course there is no subsitute for riot gears but most people cant afford or justify the cost of them.

lol, cute. love how you doubt that some people can have guns that out perform your expectations.
my lil m4 with a barrel that is under 300mm prommy barrel and when it was shooting 370fps/w .2's could reach out past 250' accurately. it has an r-hop style mod, i use different materials and injection mold them into the barrel window.
my lr300 does better than that, of course it is also shooting about 405-408fps and is my field rifle and is made to punch through bushes. if you go to LCXII this year you just might get to see it.

here is the link to my youtube video. the material has changed to better materials. i am now using 2 part platinum cure silicones and urethane rubbers instead of the 1 part tin cure silicones. i had changed the tools being used and when i did that i started having curing issues. with the 2 part silicones and urethane rubbers i no longer have curing issues. im still trying out new materials.

thanks for watching.
the material that i use in this video seemed to work just fine, but it had durability issues. after 3k rnds or so it started showing wear in the form of pealing, so i switched materials. i have to make a new video with the new materials that i am using.
