RPK vs. M249

RPK vs. M249

I was planning on getting a support weapon of some sort. (The ones that I’ve listed specifically) And I’ve had a problem deciding between the two.

The advantages of the SAW that I’ve seen include:
I can use M4 magazines in it (which I will have a lot of)
Higher magazine capacity (Box magazine)
An easy to upgrade and change mechbox
Relatively easy disassembly
I can replicate my favorite AA3 kit

The advantages of the RPK that I’ve seen include:
I can have an OP4 weapon
It’s extremely accurate
It’s lighter than the SAW
It’s a more unique gun
It’s cheaper
It’s my favorite. :D

Can someone help me decide on which one to get?

(Both of these guns I was planning to get from Echo 1 or the company that they rebranded.)

RPK can also use AK magazines, so it has that going for it too.

I say RPK, since it's basically a big AK and a nice easy to work on V3 mechbox.

I'd go with the RPK

I know the RPK can use AK mags I just don't have an AK so It wasn't under pros.

So I guess I'll be getting the RPK when the Cyma/Echo1 version comes out. Unless someone can convince me for the M249.

I would not get an M249 if I were you, unless you plan on doing a lot of fixing. From what I have seen any SAW weapon that is not an RPK is extremely unreliable, so, like everyone has said, get the RPK. It is much easier to deal with, and inevitably cheaper.

You are on the right track with the Cyma RPK thats coming out, look for reviews of it, it is one of the Best AK/RPK AEG's that will be out.

The idea for me and running an RPK as a support weapon is failure, since the RPK is Built VFC style and takes 45 secs to break open and slide the GB out, it is Ideal to have a complete Spare Gearbox on person to drop it in if the first one fails (Which is also rare).

You can really do good with an RPK, its cheap, its sexy, its a bleeding AK.

Go for it!

I wouldn't say that the any M249 with the PGC style gearbox (CA, E1 or A&K) is unreliable. The gearbox is very easy work on and it also has a quick change spring which allows you to very easily change the spring in a matter of secs. It is one of the most rock solid gear boxes I have ever worked on. The only time I have ever had issues with my CA M249's, I have three, is when I upgraded them to have too high of a rate of fire.

Also I wouldn't say it is heavier then an RPK, I know a CA M249 Mk II is about the same weight as a CA RPK. A stock RPK is not any more accurate then a stock M249 it just depends on what parts you put into it.

Don't get me wrong RPK's are nice, I just don't like the long barrel. Also the CA RPK drum mag holds more bbs then any M249 box mag. They have a V3 gear box in them, which is also a solid design. Most RPK’s can be shot in semi, which is cool for chrono and if you don’t want to give your position away. They are also pretty rare to see at games, so if you like to be unique that is a plus.

It is just really comes down to what kind of loadout and look you want to go for. You should see if you can use one of each for a game and see how you like rolling with them.
