dean plugs vs tamiya connectors?

Th0r wrote:Ok, I'm understanding. So how well did it work out for you, performance wise? I want to make my M14 into Deans and I'm sure it will be cost effective. I just want some feedback on it.

I saw maybe a 10% increase in ROF and a very distinct improvement in trigger responsiveness, as a result of the much higher amperage reaching the trigger contacts. Dean's connectors are the cheapest and easiest upgrade to do to a new gun that will give you instant performance benefits. AFAIK, everyone on SOTA runs all Dean's.

EDIT: As wake.joe pointed out, properly soldering the connections is critical. Shitty solder defeats the purpose because it becomes an amperage choke-point.

So its a good Idea to change it to Deans connectors, awesome. I think I'll start looking for some deans connectors. Thanks for the input Karma.

You shouldn't even "think" about it! It should come as second nature to solder on Deans Connectors to any Batteries, Chargers and/or AEG's you buy or possess.

Where do you race at? I used to do a bit.

I crrently race with rose city scale racing. I race mostly at Timezone raceway park and timezone 2. Right now I am a sponsored driver for hot bodies :D (I am also the current regional champion for rubber tire stock(17.5 turn motor) touring car class), I drive the Cyclone World Champion Edition. Every once in a while i might race at A-main but I am a die hard on road guy. Onroad is the elite of R/C. i also drive nitro sedan but not to as much of an extant as electric TC.

P.S.

LOL traxxas connectors! duratrax=duracrap traxxas=crap-sass

Yeah I raced a bit of onroad in my day. (google my name and team xray) Say whats up to all the guys at timezone, they will remember me.

P.S. The TRX connector is just as good as the deans in terms of resistance :D

Bad Karma wrote:Yes, you are pretty much spot on. Also, the clips on Tamiya connectors wear out after only 50-100 cycles of plugging, which creates problems. The snug fit and (usually) gold plating on Dean's means you get a nearly lossless amperage throughput, versus only 15 amps or so from a Tamiya.

It's important to not forget to wire the internal Tamiya connector near the gearbox to Dean's as well as the one near the battery, otherwise the whole procedure becomes superfluous to improving performance. It seems obvious to do both, but was the very noobish mistake I made when I converted my first gun to Dean's.

Alright, first off, I'm sorry I am.. "Necro-posting" is it? Anyway, I am confused, what is this internal Tamiya you speak of?

Many guns have a Tamiya connector coming off of the wiring harness in the gearbox. This connector attaches to a long run of wire to the battery compartment where the other Tamiya connector for your battery would be.

Just a side note, there is a RC plane/car place down in Salem that will put Deans onto your gun (parts and labor ) for 5$. Probably some up in Portland area too.

Also, if you watch a few videos on youtube or have someone show you some basic soldering skill, you can do it yourself!

After I made my guns use deans there was a very noticeable difference in ROF and trigger response. Best cost to effectiveness upgrade i've ever done on my gun.
