M14 vs M16 for accurate field rifle?

Hmmm, you've already gotten a lot of wiser opinions, and you seem to have declared a decision. I still had a little note (or large).. Psuedo mentioned that you could put a longer barrel in an M4.

Personally, I would much prefer to have an M4 with a longer barrel and suppressor over a similar length M16. I think it would have a higher sexiness factor. But that's just me.

So chasing down the M16 with extra monie$ seems a little silly to me, since you could save cash by just swapping to a longer barrel, instead of a whole new gun that is the same but longer. However, if your heart is set on having the big brother and the little brother, whatever floats your boat. I suppose that’s not too unreasonable, because I can understand wanting to cover both med/long range and short/med range with separate guns that have the same loadouts in concern to mags, pouches, familiarity, etc. The SR12 isn’t a bad idea, I would be tempted to really trick one out to completely cover the DMR niche spectrum, but there goes frugality.. I guess I think you’d be disappointed if you chased down an M16 but didn’t completely capitalize on the accuracy, having a similar AR-platform.
SR12 of niceness.. <Do it a favor and move that AFG forward and throw me a suppressor on.

Likewise, Archangel brought up the notion of what you want. Personally, I find these veeey niice. Nicest non-G&P M14 that I can think of. Yes, it's nice to transfer all your reloading/movement and body memory to a similar gun, but if it was me getting the new gun bug, I would want something truly new?.. No? Your choice. Of course, Beran so speaks the truth.. You don’t achieve accuracy by spending the most money. Most guns need work and time, not necessarily loads of aftermarket parts.

That was a lotta speak and I’m not sure if it was helpful. I hope so.

Final surprise idea, weighing in at 10 lbs..

The 70% number is anecdotal, and probably a guesstimate. At 175', the first shot is frequently effected by wind and usually is a ranging shot. I can hit the stump within two shots at 175' since it doesn't move. In game play, I try to move to within 100' or so before I shoot. If I can get any of these guns sighted on a target at 100', they are dead. And I make a habit of double tapping.

For some reason, and I don't know why, my CA PMC-X shoots lasers. The BB's go flat for around 200' or so, then sort of slowly peter out and drift down. There is some horizontal deviation at range, but it never is more than approx. 10% side to side. I did a "hail mary" shot at maybe 225' once, and I actually hit the guy. Neither one of us believed it. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened since.

Both of the KWA's go strong for a similar distance then sharply curve down. No amount of hop adjustment seems to change the trajectory at long range. And for what it's worth, all of my KWA GBB's seem to exhibit a similar behavior.

The optic zero distances are the ranges I can hit 100% of the time, barring strong winds.

I no longer shoot airsoft guns with stock barrels. I always install at least a 6.03 tight bore. I used to play the guns a few games, but don't bother anymore. I've never upgraded to a tight bore and not seen an immediate improvement in accuracy. I installed a 6.03 in a G&P Sentry last month and saw a significant range and accuracy increase.

I did some thinking about BB count, and considering my typical game play style, both the M16 and CA M4 probably have shot around 10k BB's.

I used to try to measure groupings, but it just pissed me off too much. I've shot real rifles too much, and the unpredictable randomness of BB's just drives me crazy. A 10" circle at 175' is just fine for me. Especially considering how fat many airsofters are. Trying to improve accuracy at that range just doesn't seem worth the money.

I'm expecting good things from the SR-10. Out of the box, it shot like crap, completely disappointing. The range was worse than my KP45 Tactical GBB. I was kind of stupid, and did two things at once to the SR-10. I did a thorough cleaning of the bucking, and installed the 6.01 Edgi at the same time. So I don't know if it was cleaning all of the crap out of the bucking, or the $75.00 IB that cured the range problems.

Sorry for all of the jabber. No work today, so I've just polished off a six pack of Dogfish Head IPA...

These are waaaay sexy, but they are beasts. We had the CA version...cool looking. Made a habit of pinching myself every time I adjusted the stock, and the damn thing got caught on everything. Diggin through the pucker-brush with one of these? Oh my achin'...

Part of me wishes we still had it though... :snipx0r:

Yep, it just depends on what youre after.
I convinced my pal to buy an RS SVD. About 15 lbs with the battery and everything, but I gotta love the consistency.
I think I would prefer the looks of that special M14 though, the SVD is a little too non-NATO for my tastes sometimes.

Wurger,

Not jabber at all. Good stuff. Very few people do any comparisons on their airsoft guns. I'm in the process of building 100' targets with different barrel configurations (length, tbb, etcetera) to actually test groupings. I might PM you and have you shoot a midlength barrel grouping for me in a few weeks.

We just picked up the RS SVD! Sexy Beast...true though, it is heavy with the scope and battery. Though for my money, it outperforms the EBR hands down.

The realsword SVD outperforms just about everything out of the box... But with work, I've made M16s that can outrange some of the bolts out there.

I rock a VFC M4 and put in a JB Unicorn 6.01 tightbore, and I am getting some great range and accuracy on my gun. In my opinion, the length of the M16 is why I chose an M4. It's long and can just get in the way
