my battery is freaking out

Postby Patrick750 » Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:59 pm

i just bought a 9.6v 1200mah intellect nunchuck battery. i charged it and checked that it worked by dry firing it for about 1 second on full auto. worked like a charm. anyways, i dropped it and when i got home i shot it again and it hissed and wouldn't fire. i didn't over charge it, infact about 1/2 an hour under charged. what's wrong? should i even bother recharging it or would it screw it up worse? is it the gun's fault? HELP!!

If your battery hissed at you, that is a problem. I would throw away the battery and NOT use it.

This could be caused by a short somewhere in the gun; metal touching exposed wiring or some other similar problem.

You may have also blown a fuse. If you took your battery off the charger and it was hot, it may have blown the fuse. In my experience, many Chinese guns come with weaker fuses (15A or 20A) that can be broken with a fluctuation; when the battery is hot, it tends to do that. Check a disassembly guide for your particular model and take a look at the fuse on the wiring. If it's broken, replace it with something with a little more oomph.

i used the gun today with a different battery. worked fine. it's not a chinese gun but it is a sportline. i'll look at the fuse for sure. there probably was metal touching metal i'll wrap that part up with some elec. tape.

bumped because of another question. also, should i get a new battery or just recharge my current one even though it fizzed, i checked and taped all exposed wiring.

If it actually functions, then you can probably safely use it. Charge it on a safe, fire resistant surface though. My friend charged his battery on my carpet and it exploded, burning a hole in it. He was very lucky that the house didn't catch fire.
Also, are you using a smart charger? If you are counting times, then I'm guessing not. I recommend that you buy one IMMEDIATELY. They pretty much destroy the chance of exploding a battery.

Actually, that happens to be the very same charger that exploded the battery. But it was probably due to bad ventilation on the carpet. I use this charger now

And it is simply amazing. It can charge any airsoft Nicad/Nimh batteries with ease.

I don't think I've ever charged a 1500mah on it, but I did a 1600 mini and it wasn't long at all, less than an hour. But It might have had some juice left in it already from the week before. If you get it, make sure to read the chart it comes with to make sure you set it right.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a $3 multi-meter. Use it regularly to check voltage to ensure that the battery holds a charge, still has enough charge to power the gun, etc. Voltage for batteries will vary, but they will be around this same general area: 7.2v = 9.0v charged; 8.4v = 10.0v charged; 9.6v = 11.0v charged. THIS IS ONLY AN AVERAGE. I am not posting anything higher than 9.6v because I have no experience with them. Different chemical makeups will also change voltages (NiMh vs NiCd).

Multi-meters are cheap and EXTREMELY useful for airsofters because they can be used not only to check voltage, but also to determine if there is a break anywhere in the circuit. Seriously, buy one. You will know right away if your battery is in fact bad.

It is common knowledge.

If the battery was hissing at you, it's probably the battery alone, and not a problem in the gun. This can be a broken wire, a bad contact, or battery chemistry that's about to go really bad.

I would be willing to bet it is venting if it was hissing at you.

Although I don't know why the charger you linked to is $35, because it is a cheap ripoff of this charger

Which I have been using for over a year with no problems on NiCd or NiMH batteries. It's decently fast, and has two settings for large or small mAh batteries.
