How often do I need to charge a li po battery?

Postby GacktC » Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:32 am

Hello, I bought a 7.4V 1200mah li po battery the other day, but once I opened the package and tried to charge it up, the charger indicated the battery was already fully charged, is that normal?
I shot about 500 rounds yesterday to test the battery, everything was fine, but then I thought it was time to recharge the battery, the charger also said it was full charge..
My gun has a M130 spring with torque up gear & motor, so it is not running high ROF.
I wonder if my charger is broken or it is normal for a li po battery.

Thank you.

Are you using a Lipo charger? Some batteries come charged and balanced while some don't. Just depends on where you ordered from and how long it took to ship. As far as how often you charge a lipo they will out last regular nihm packs not by much tho. I would suggest that you charge and balance your lipo's the night before or day of your game. And yes its normal for the battery pack to says its fully charged and balanced after shooting for a small amount of time

Yes, I am using a li po charger.
So a li po battery doesn't drain as easy/fast as an nimh battery?
Thanks.

I usually charge batteries when they run out of charge.

If you want ROF dont get torque parts. If you dont already know, torque is the ammount of power. High speed parts will get you high speed. I would get a m110 sprind a motor that between the two, a bore up kit and tight bore so your fps will be higher. Also get some really nice hop up.

Li po supposes to ship with 50% charged right? I just don't know why mine was already full charged when arrived..
Yes, I don't need high ROF, but I prefer a smaller & lighter battery than the bulky crankstock type.
My aeg already has the bore up cylinder kit & a Sys's inner barrel.
Perhaps my charger/balancer is broken..I bought it from asgi :(

Lipo batteries have a capacity that is 2-3 times their NIMH counterparts so your battery wont discharge near as quickly as a NIMH or NICD. Also, one of the things you never want to let happen is a full discharge from your lipo i.e. When it starts to chug STOP FIRING immediately and if you can, get it put back on charge ASAP.
A LIPO battery will become a paperweight if it is allowed to drop below a voltage of (If I remember correctly) 2.7-3.1 volts. This is roughly the threshold voltage when your gun starts to 'chug'. With a NIMH you can let it sit, and fire a few times more after it settles and regains a charge - this is not advised with a lipo as it will kill it.
There are several places where you can get lipo monitors that will sound an alarm or cut off the voltage after the battery reaches its low end threshold. They run for about 7 dollars online at various hobby (read: RC) stores.
Some restrictions apply, your mileage may vary.

Are you saying you charged the battery when you got it, went out to shoot it, came back to charge it again and the charger said it was full? If so it sounds like you charger is dead, although this is very rare it could be the case.

I advise you buy a "lipo voltage monitor"; I use mine all the time to see how charged my batteries are. They display the voltages of each cell and with that information you can calculate how charged your lipo is. Thisis the one I have but any well stocked store that sells lipos should have them I think evike might even have them and they are all over ebay of course.
4.2v is full charge, 3.6v is a dead lipo and therefore 3.9v is half.

Don't worry its normal for a new LiPo to say its still fully charged when it's new . Keep an eye on it charge it when your done with it and it will be OK . I have been using LiPo's for 4 years now . Most of the guys that come to my field to play use them . With a LiPo you can use it and charge it up after every game and you wont have to worry about over charging it if your using a LiPo charger , It won't hurt it , BUT do not let that battery drop below 80% or it will be dead for ever . Your charger is working . Go play a long game it will need a charge then . Hope this makes sense cuz I'm BUTT tired right now . But in short Don't worry .

Thank you guys!
I guess I need to play with the battery all they and figure out if the battery or the charger is no good or not.
So a fully charged battery won't drop the voltage even I have it sits in the draw correct?
