Upgrade MP5 Vs Buying new gun

Postby RiotingCows » Tue Sep 21, 2010 11:29 pm

My friend currently has a CA MP5A2 and doesn't really like the range he gets out of it and would like either a DMR or support gunner type weapon.

He doesn't have much free cash on hand so instead of trying to buy a new gun and upgrade it I was trying to tell him what options he has for upgrading his MP5 to a gun he could use as one of those role types. Only thing is I'm not sure whats out there as far as MP5 upgrades because it is mainly a CQC weapon.

Any suggestions?

http://tinyurl.com/2em34hx This'll get him started. You'll have to count up the length of the new barrel and figure out what size inner barrel he needs. After that, hop up bucking is probably a good idea, maybe a higher spring. I'm not an airsmith, so there may be secondary upgrades that the new barrel or spring need.
But it's a viable platform. There's your pitch.

That is a good idea Helo but it's not very pleasing to the eye. A threaded flash hider and a long suppressor will look much better and achieve the same effect.

Cows, if your friend wants to fill in the role of a DM I see nothing wrong with him wanting a new gun to better fit in. But if he wants the same range and effectiveness as a DMR then upgrading might work. It would just have it's limitations when compared to an M14 or M16.

If he's after a DMR or support weapon, he'll be better off starting with a new platform as an MP5 doesn't really lend to those systems well.

A new M14 can be had for pretty cheap and with a new bucking, nub and TBB would fit the bill of DMR quite well.

Ya, I agree with Jew on this. A buddy of mine has an upgraded Mp5 that was his primary for a while. But he was only getting the performance of about a standard M4. If that makes any sense. *shrugs*

Okay so say he has a 150 to maybe 200 dollar budget.
The outer barrel is $60
510mm(estimated) Inner tbb $50?
Spring $10?

Other than that what upgrades or changes can be done for under $80 or so.

Did he extend the barrel or just upgrade it?

$200 budget? That's plenty for a new gun...

GUN: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=27163 $129.99
Hop up bucking: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=30606 $9.00
Hop up NUB: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=31599 $6.00
Scope: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=27192 $35.00
Scope Rings: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=25594 $7.99
BB's: http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=24128 $6.99

You still have $5 left of your $200 budget. Have a competent tech install them (which would probably put you/him over budget depending on how much the tech charges).

Also, an Mp5 will never be a DMR/Support role weapon. It is a sub-machine gun for a reason. It is small for a reason. It was designed for close in fire where you need a small, maneuverable gun. It excels at that quite well. DMR weapons are generally bigger due to having longer barrels to increase accuracy. They are generally heavier due to using a larger caliber (IE .308 vs 9mm). Support weapons are bigger and heavier for the same reasons I mentioned above, PLUS they carry 200 rounds of ammunition (for a real M249). The barrel needs to be thicker to be able to withstand the heat generated when firing that many rounds (even though it seems not to do that so well since SAW gunners are well versed in the rapid barrel change...). So, tell your buddy to leave the Mp5 the way it is, and use it for what it was meant for CLOSE IN WORK. I gave you everything you need within your budget to set up a pretty good DMR weapon.

Thanks Jester sounds like a good way to go.

If he were to choose a m16 over an m14 would it be best to invest in a TBB or would they have comparable range and accuracy without?

You will probably find similar accuracy with both rifles. I would personally make an investment in a TBB anyway. Always upgrade the hop and barrel first.

Support weapons cost A LOT... And so does everything that makes them function...(mags, ammo, replacement parts for all the extra use.)

I think his original thought was just to throw on a drum mag, upgrade the motor and put on a longer barrel. Fits the role type pretty much

Please don't. Aside from the mechanical issues that creates, drum mags on an MP5 is a good way to piss off most of the people he plays with.
