running lipos in parallel

Postby anubis » Thu Jan 06, 2011 9:30 am

so i have a 2200 mah 7.4v lipo after fitting it to my saw i found that i can easily fit a second one in the forward grip. now i know its just fine to run normal battery's in parallel basically just turning 2 small battery's in to one larger battery

but with the lipos could running them in parallel cause the to short out
any advise on this matter would be great

Why would it be any different with lipos? It's fine.

Hmmm...Is it not important to occasionally balance the cell voltage levels, so that they are all at the same level. By connecting 2 in parallel potentially an imbalance could now exist between the 2 batteries...one 3.7v per cell, one at 3.5v.

I do a lot of larger battery bank work with my job, and I know that when you hook batteries in parallel you want the exact same capacity and age of battery, as the overall capacity will be only double of the smaller battery. Also the difference in capacities can shorten the life of the batteries.

I would expect that this is the same principle when hooking 2 lipos in parallel as well.

This has been done, and there's a way to do it safely.

Instead of hard-wiring the batteries together, wire a splitter with the correct plugs on each end of the Y. This allows you to plug in two batteries to your AEG at once, in parallel, and you just unplug each battery and charge and balance them normally as single packs.

What he said.

You can ether buy them or make them.
Search Ebay for "Parallel Deans", they run about $7 (with shipping) or if your cheap, like myself, you can buy three Deans connectors and wire it yourself.
There's a difference between a person who has a screwdriver and a person who knows what they are doing.
