M4 Build questions

Postby Minerva » Fri Jan 07, 2011 12:25 am

So I'm attempting my first M4 high ROF build

NOTE: I don't care how weak people say V2's are, I like them :)

So heres the deal, I have this ARES M4 sittin around my gun safe (yes airsoft guns go with the real steel) and I was thinking i wanted to do something i have never done before..a high speed setup!

I dont want anything crazy just something that will put a good stream of bbs out when i need it in cqb.

So heres the parts I have and i need suggestions on what else to get to make this an effective little spray gun

Base gun: ARES M4A1

(I am fixing shimming/regreasing and AoE so don't worry about that)
Internals I have off hand:
Systema high speed gearset
M100 spring
G&P M120 High Speed Motor
Systema hop up bucking
and a spare Intellect 9.6v battery

What else do you guys think I would need to get this thing going? Whats the projected RPS with this stuff in it? I would like to keep on a budget seeing as a girlfriend takes up most of my money

Go for an M90 or lower spring. CQC you don't need to worry about range as much, and a sub 300fps gun will give you more bb's down range also.

Also keep in mind that you WILL break the gearbox doing this. So just be prepared for that eventuality.

This is a procedure discussed and documented ad nauseum on the Airsoft Mechanics Forum. Do a search and you can find lots of very detailed posts from many many experienced airsoft gun-docs on exactly this. And most of them show how to achieve a solid high-speed build without sacrificing too much FPS.

The gearbox itself would break? I dont think the m100 spring would put that much strain on it.. Even if it would happen I guess I'd replace it with a G&P or Bravo 8mm.

What he means is the higher ROF is going to get it to the breaking point sooner as opposed to a regular setup. I have an M90 in my P90 (with high speed gears) and it unleashes plastic death like its going out of style.

What you have should work just fine, but you might have feeding issues (mags keeping up with the speed).

Ah I see. All the reason to get some G&P gearbox into my gun. Any magazine suggestions as to what would feed that quickly? Oh and do I need a new piston? I'm thinking a G&P White polycarb or maybe the G&G Co-alloy/polycarb.

switch to DEANS!!! Cheap, very effective, and a simple and fun DIY project on a rainy day.

All of the Ares internals are pretty bad, really. Don't get systema gears though, just get SHS or RiotSC if you can afford it. And just get a lipo battery. You can get 30rps without much effort using a decent lipo, standard ratio gears, and a nice motor.

Like I said I had the Systema gears laying around and looked into RiotSC but will only buy them if these gears break. I'm not sure about the LiPo though..Never used one before. They are so pricey too at $100 for just a battery.

Patrick: Do I just have to replace the Tamiya connections to Deans?? Or is there something more to it?

yes it needs to be replaced but it's easier then it sounds. Just snip off the current connecter, strip the wire, and soder it to the new connector. If you try searching AP there are lots of more in depth explanations

Ok that sounds WELL within my soldering level. Thank god for highschool robotics.. Any suggestions on a place to pick up some deans? And what about the lipo? Is it really worth it?
