Too much lube bad?

Postby CCCman » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:21 pm

Hi, I have an OCD about rust, and I lube EVERY part on ALL my guns.
Once a month, i will take my guns fully apart and spray every single part with silicone oil and then reassemble the guns. I do this to my aeg and my gbb, i lube all internals and all externals. is this a good thing or a bad thing?
My friends say its ridiculous how i spray my rail, receiver, stock, buffer tube, mags, trigger, barrel, silencer, screws, pins, etc.

Lubericants attract dirt and dust, so too much lubrication can worsen this and make your gearbox all dirty and eventually possibly fail. This can be prevented though by using less lube or cleaning out everything before each lube.

Hope this helps.

I'd be very very carefull about using too much lube. For EXTERNAL METAL ONLY, (I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH) a small amount of CLP or breakfree rubbed on with a cloth for a very light coat can prevent rusting, it's the same as a real firearm. HOWEVER!!! Should some of that stuff even come close to your internals, kiss your weapon goodbye, there's even a stickied thread about it.

As far as lubricating your internals, don't worry about spraying silicon on every little piece. I suggest Shin Etsu grease, apply a light coat to your gears, their teeth, your piston, piston head, inside of the cylinder. Keep away from your trigger and switch. Also, a bit on your pinyon gear will be benificial. Use silicon spray before play, shoot a good amount, not the whol can, just a few short bursts down the barrel. Dry fire your weapon a few times, and blast away. Your first few shots might be squirly but believe me, it makes a big difference.

A good friend of mine once told me a story about anal sex. I'll save you that horror story, but what I can say of that story is this: bad things happen to good people who use too much lube.

LOL. But what does happen if lube touches the trigger and switch?

It's an electrical component. What do YOU think will happen?

Like you, I hate rust corrosion etc....That said, Lube when applied too liberally to guns does indeed attract allx sorts of unwanted debris, dust etc. It does not do good things to your AS guns. Be particularly careful with penetrating type lubes such as WD 40. They will literally creep into any space available. I used to do annual inspections on duty weapons for the agency that I was employed by. Some of the guns were so gunked up on the inside, that they were almost unfit for service. I also recall a friend of mine who used to use WD 40 to clean his revolver ( early 80's). It actually penetrated into the powder in the cartridges and caused misfires at the range. Fortunately it never happened on duty. I can only imagine what a penetrating type lube would do to a gear box with the loose tolerances / unsealed gaps involved. In addition you are probably causing more wear damage by continually dis assembling your guns than is prudent.

I have found this http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1280 ... de__LIQUID , to work very well on AS guns as well as real steel. Its pretty hard to over apply.
