Postby Hutch » Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:41 pm

Get a big heavy box, put the lipo under it, duck for cover. No shit an inflating lipo is dangerous.

Your charger could be malfunctioning and overcharging. I had that issue and it was the charger. I wouldn't trust that battery to even pick it up if its swollen, it's like a time bomb

Here are instructions of how to dispose of it from an R/C website:

5. Submerse the battery into bucket or tub of salt water. This container should have a lid,
but it should not need to be air-tight. Prepare a plastic container (do not use metal) of cold
water. And mix in 1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water. Drop the battery into the salt water.
Allow the battery to remain in the tub of salt water for at least 2 weeks.
6. Remove the LiPo battery from the salt water, wrap it in newspaper or paper towels and
place it in the normal trash. They are landfill safe.

Here is the website in case you have any other questions: http://www.rctoys.com/pdf/thunder-power-disposal-of-old-damaged-lipo-batteries.pdf

Have you ever balanced the cells? Not to say you should do it now...

Borat doesn't think the battery is safe Alpha.
Way to have a helpful post Psuedo.

And Nec, you probably know, but saying "have you ever.." balanced it might be kind of misleading. The battery balances itself over time by connection of cells, the concern is that they naturally charge sort of unequally. Since a normal, non-balancing charger is only reading the output voltage, it might think everything is OK when one of the cells is over-charged. But since your avatar is a LiPo you probably knew all that.

Overcharged leads to swelling, swelling leads to a firey death! :)

strange... I'm using a balanced and Li-Po smart charger and a pretty high quality battery. I dont know if I want to get rid of it, but I guess I dont want a fiery death, so I'm just going to buy a new standard small-type battery. Thanks guys, you probably saved my life!

Pssh on multiple occasions. Any time dude.

If you haven't already, not a bad time to pick up a lipo alarm to prevent over-discharging your new batt.
