Poofiness on a lipo

Postby Peaches » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:04 pm

On a lipo, how poofy is to poofy before it becomes unsafe to use? One of the main batteries I have now is starting to well expand a little bit, and I have heard/read that the moment that it starts to expand it should be tossed, just looking for other .02$.

I hope you're drunk. Or joking.

Toss that battery. It's toast.

If it is just slightly poofy, it's fine.

I ran a bent lipo once. It worked fine.

Lipos will naturally swell slightly with age. If the voltages are still checking out, and the cells are balanced it should be fine. If what I just said makes no sense to you, toss it.

Actually don't just toss it. Do this: http://www.rctoys.com/pdf/thunder-power ... teries.pdf

are you discharging your lipo, and/or using a balancer when recharging it?

It's my understanding that when a Lipo becomes swollen, or disfigured in anyway. It has the possibility of catching fire when being charged, or even discharged. I would dispose of it.

Nope not dis-charging it. I am beginning to wonder if it is because I am using one of those "el cheapo" balancing chargers IE http://rsov.com/product.php?langId=1&cu ... cateId=110

Also, they have maybe puffed out 1/16's of an inch, so it's not that much.

After some google searching and some reading, apparently putting your lipo in the fridge for a long time (one guy did it for a month, if he is to be believed) can fix the puffyness.

The general consensus on using puffy cells seemed to be that it is not a big deal until the cells start to show signs of failure (not balancing, low voltage). Of course care needs to be taken with any lipo, and you definitely need to get a lipo smart charger that will allow you to properly charge and balance it and monitor the voltage.

Personally, I would keep using it as long as it balances correctly and you protect it from being over-discharged. I wouldn't necessarily recommend someone else do so, since there is a slight risk.
