Metal vs polymer body ( search bar used)

Postby Lukens » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:24 am

As in the title, I searched for references comparing metal vs plastic bodies. Please dont flame me. back on topic.

Im looking to buy a new M4 style rifle, and Im wondering whether its worth it to break my budget, or just switch to buying a different gun altogether, to get a metal body or not.

Im currently using a JG S-system. Works great, but Im looking to get into higher end rifles. ive been looking at the G&G raider series, as I've seen them to be very popular as of late. However, its got a fully plastic receiver unit. Is the gun itself good enough on its own? Or does a metal body, and thus the corosponding upgrade in quality in the overall gun(hopefully), merit the extra hundred or so bucks? I really only have about $200 to spend here, and I'd like to to keep it in that range. Anymore cash, and it starts breaking into my food budget haha.

I understand that there are many reviews of the G&G series. But im asking for a comparison to metal bodied units. Anyone have any suggestions here? Ive looked at KWAs, but they are sadly out of my price range.

I have a G&G Raider and don't worry about the durability of the body. It seems sturdy enough. Main benefit of the metal body in my opinion is the weight.

Personally I would go with a metal body. I had one Echo 1 body break on me when I dropped it. With the metal body, I really don't worry about that (thought I don't use the sling attachment points that come with the gun anymore though)

JG/Echo 1 plastic bodies are pretty cheesy. But the Combat Machine (G&G) are pretty durable, and internally sound. I think the only advantage of metal bodies are cool points and for mil-sim guys who want their gun's more similar to their real steel counterparts.

If your going to buy another rifle, you might as well save up another $100 for a G&P or KWA. Its worth your pennies.

As for the combat machine series. They work well. But G&G skimps out on random things. Wiring is one of them. Cheap a$$ motors are another (a 4 year old motor from a JG Mp5 was better than the POS motor that came in my combat machine Mp5). You'd probably spend more parts to make the combat machines work up to spec than you would on a KWA or G&P rifle.

Plus, a plastic body M4 doesn't feel right. Sure, its lightweight, but even my janky a$$ AGM M4 feels better than any plastic M4 I've fondled.

As not above, for durability the G&G Raider series seem pretty reliable.

Here are the reasons I think you might want a metal body, from most serious to least:
1) Teh coolz (milsim)
2) Durability (rarely an issue)
3) Body flex (only an issue at very long ranges)
4) Teh coolz (engraving, lazer etching)

The Raider series has a solid reputation. I too have heard the spotty reports of motors and wiring, but they're rarer than people want to believe. Fact is, it's a good gun. Go for it.

Oh, and skip the blowback. God, please skip the blowback.

Im hearing this a lot. Thanks for the positive review lol. I just want something that can take the occasional nock, and still come up fighting. Not to mention, still have a good feel to it. I dont mind plastic, just...not shoddy plastic.

You're not blind. They're tough to find online. AONW usually stocks one, I believe. The last one I saw in person was purchased from Blackwater, but I don't think Riddick stocks them anymore. Call around! Or, if you'd prefer, I'll call around. ;)

With not much looking, I surprisingly found what I w as looking for. Now I just feel real Lazy. This is pretty much exactly what im looking for. Thanks for all your guyses(however you say it) help. Id rather go with a heavy wallet then a heavier gun.

Anyone have any opinions on this specific rifle before I whip out the ole card and buy it?

Guyses? REALLY? It's Guys'.

G&G Combat Machines, best starter weapon IMO, not bad back up or even budget primary to everyone else.

Or you could pop for a KWA Sportline....

plastic doesn't mean "bad"
the D-boys SCAR-L(and all other SCAR-L) has a plastic lower, but my D-BOYS has lasted longer than other metal body guns. when you break it down the only difference between metal and plastic is that plastic brings down the cost. it takes more energy and time to cast/CNC a metal body than it does to mold plastic.

furthermore don't let the G&G plastic fool you, even though its made out of polymer i've seen more cracked JG pot metal than broken G&G bodies. ASGI also did a 9foot drop test and their guns still work fine.

non-blowback G&G are called "combat machine." rick has the CM16 selling for 120$ tomorrow. but if you can wait and want something that "should"(and i use the word lightly) be a bit better you can look into the KWA sportsline like TheWolverine showed. airsoft GI is going to be selling 50 first production modes tomorrow though its walkin store only the rest should be available by the end of the month
