Majority of it is in the bucking. Soft, Hard, 60 to 80 degree I believe. R Hop bucking, G hop up bucking, Flat hop up bucking. A team mate has the same M4 as you mention and his gun is hitting 175ft. There is a lot of factors on everything your asking. It's not just the hop up unit you asked for. Type of barrel (steel, brash, 6.01, 6.03, 6.05 and length of barrel(. Weight of Bb it's all a puzzle and you have to figure it out. First thing to do is get a TBB I recommend the 363mm 6.01 Angel. Others will say watch for jamming on the 6.01 but if you use good Bbs not this walmart or crossbow brands you will be fine. I've ran the 6.01 for 2 years now and have NEVER had a jam issue. I like the 70 degree hard buckings and use 0.25g to 0.30 Bbs.
If anyone thinks other wise speak up but that's what I go by and have used

look for a good quality cnc hop up for the best seal and accuracy then follow what cyclops said the most important part af range and accuracy is the bucking and nub combo

If it is not feeding then check for wear on your tappet plate. As it wears the nozzle doesn't get pulled back all the way and bbs get stuck. If the bbs are rolling out the barrel make sure you have the hop up on, or the bbs will roll out the barrel.

For hop up i second what Cyclops said. I like the maple leaf flat buckings alot in AEGs and RHOP in my long range guns if you have the ~10 hours it takes to fit them properly... a labor of love.
