Help! My barrel is too long!

Postby tingsoon1 » Tue May 11, 2010 4:10 pm

I've got a quick question about installing a tightbore MK96 6.01mm barrel in my new ASR... It's protruding about 55mm out past the regular barrel, and I was wondering: Should I cut it of and sand it? What would be the best type of saw for that? Any advice you could give me would be great!

Thanks!
I talk too much.

Measure how long you need it and use a fine toothed hack saw blade. It should cut fairly easily (for metal). Then crown the end by sanding the inside edge down just a little. Be careful when cutting and crowning it. Also make sure the cut is at a perfect 90 angle. Then clean the barrel with silicon oil and you cleaning rod. Install it and all should be good.

If you have the equipment, after you cut it you can counter sink it.

Get a metal tubing cutter (inexpensive and that accepts no larger 3/4" tubing or so) and that will work perfect for making sure your cut is 90 deg. One way to counter-sink it is to get a large drill bit (ie. 3/8") and lightly rotate it by hand at the barrel opening. That will remove the excess metal (also called de-burring). Lightly sand that countersunk area (careful not so sand the inside diameter of the barrel) and you should be golden for a smooth, professional look and finish.
