Ghillie Netting

Postby shakespeare » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:27 pm

I've recently started to rehaul my ghillie suit. I've been looking at videos on how to make one for real, and I have decided to get an OD flight suit, sew on a hood, and sew + shoegoo on netting to tie the jute grass to. The problem I'm having is getting the netting to tie it to. One of my friends got a hammock, but it was white and I thought it might give it away. So I'm wondering what kind of netting people used? Thanks. I'm really trying to do this the right way.

one piece is a huge noob mistake, go the two piece route. not ony is the wookie look more prevelant in the one piece suits the heat transfer is beyond negotiable.

for what you are doing, airsoft, a two piece works fine, hell you can get away with just a blouse and a boonie.

you are not hunting pablo escobar, or going in country, so a one piece is a horrible mistake.

Doing a two piece is a cheaper option for me, considering my extra BDUS lying around. Thanks! I still need to know what kind of netting is best though. Also, how do I carry gear while ghillied up? Would I just put burlap on my ALICE rig?

1. You're a sniper. You need one bullet for gear, right? No, seriously, ghillies are meant to be worn over everything else--so gear up, then put on the ghillie. At least, that's what I've always seen done.

2. Yes, boonie and your top. You don't need a ghillie bottom. Especially in airsoft, where every "sniper" I've ever seen is always running off to get a better spot....

Types of netting you could use would be fishing net that you could get at a sporting goods store, or you could get the camo blind netting that is sold as 'personal netting' or 'sniper blind netting'. That stuff is light, strong and is already camouflaged so all you'd need to do is tie in place, shoegoo it, and start tying in your jute.
Just dont go to a feed store and get 'bird netting', that plastic crap is too light and tears apart under the stresses that would be encountered from crawling in brush and getting snagged by branches.

I bought some Realtree camo netting from what used to be Sportsman's warehouse for a great price (>$15). It's lightweight, and is pre-camo'd, so you don't have to worry about the material standing out.

It is common knowledge.

I'm doing kind of the same thing (building a ghillie suit, but different layout), and have had a phony pony of a time finding netting. JoAnnes Fabrics, Home Depot, Sportsmans Warehouse all have 0 type of 1''x1'' square netting. I'd suggest ordering it online. Like Ka-Bar said, go the 2 piece route. As it was so delicately explained by Gunny, taking a tactical crap in a 1 piece suit is near impossible. However, doing it in a 2 piece is as easy as taking your pants off.

some of my first builds were out of the 1x1 that is sold, and in stock at andy n bax. $7 bucks a yard, i got 2 yards.

the new style is to sew your own grid, that is about 2x2 out of 550. lightly jute in browns, then veg it.

this is how i built my newest cobra/viper hood camo system. this can be worn solo, or with a vest.

have at it, ghillies can be fun.

I'd do the paracord version, but I lack paracord. So, I'm trying to find the damn netting (living in Corvallis sucks on availability of supplies). I just got done shredding the burlap (took me 7 hours to shred 4.75 yards). Now, i just need the netting.

Interesting. Paracord might work for me, because it is semi-camouflaged and tough as hell. To make a paracord net, would I tie it together, or sew it?

Check craft stores for netting, there's a hobby lobby in our neighborhood that carries huge swaths of the fishing netting for $10. If you wanted to paypal me for cost and shipping I could pick some up for you and have usps drop it on your doorstep. Takers PM me.

I have found that if you Hot glue it down first then sew over it makes a nice grid and you can remove the hot glue just before sewing so not to destroy your sewing needle.
Just a thought.

shoo goo was my choice, either way works.

actually the reason i choose shoo goo is it does'nt break down like hot glue. and it is water proof and can be used to initially tack down the grid, and can also be applied on sew points to prevent thread wear and rot.
