If you honestly like sniping, that's your prerogative. Some people may judge you for it, but if you truly enjoy it, it's your game. Now, I maintain that it is better for any new player to begin as a rifleman before trying out anything specialized, as is can build base skills up and help you to understand how airsoft is played, but if you feel you've found your niche, run with it.
Before anyone starts hating on you and making you cry like a little schoolgirl (I'm looking at Karma, or DMitri), I'll try to break down the main reasons that people advise new players from jumping in to sniping (please, if anyone wants to add on, correct me), in a somewhat nicer tone than many others will.
1. Airsoft =/= Call of Duty: You will not get hundreds upon hundreds of kills by running around with a bolt action rifle. If you want to be a true sniper, and hide in the bushes all game, you'll be lucky to get a kill all day. This simple fact is because you won't be shooting at every shrub that moves, rather waiting for targets of value to come by your crosshairs, as opposed to targets of opportunity. If you choose the Designated Marksman role, you will get a chance to see a bit more action, but you won't really be sniping; you'll be running with a fireteam, engaging targets out of range of them. You won't wear a ghille suit and crawl around.
2. Airsoft=/= real world: The main reason most of us play airsoft is, secondly to fun, to simulate a somewhat-real experience. Sniping, in a sense, kills that. In real life, an assault rife will reach out anywhere from 300 to 500 (and, in some cases, further) yards, while a sniper rifle with a proficient man behind it can easily pineapple a man's head at a mile and a half. In airsoft, a stock Echo 1 rifle will hit you at 150 feet, while a sniper rifle will, at max, hit you at around 300. The ratio is totally wonky, and the purpose of sniping is somewhat lost. It's not hard to see a man 300 feet away from you, but you really won't know it's coming if he's sitting a mile away.
Legit enough for you?
EDIT: Damn, beaten by multiple people. I guess that'll teach me to write an email and post simultaneously.
