Help on cheap but effective comm gear?

Postby Arbiter » Tue Sep 14, 2010 9:00 pm

Hey, I want to get some good but not too darn expensive comm gear stuff.. but I'm not too sure on what's good or what's compatible.. so any help would be great thanks :) Also I have heard Midland radios are good. But what type of headsets work with them and do they run silent? (no annoying beeping) thanks

I've been caught up on this issue as well. I know little to nothing about radios myself and my biggest issue right now is trying to find a mic/headset solution for a gasmask :/

For a gasmask, any of those cheap PTT button and earbuds should work. If you have more space, there are fairly cheap swimmer style headsets available with most retailers.

Unless you are wearing a Soviet GP series gas mask or a NATO model with the NBC hood , then any headset will work with a gas mask , even the old M17 series.

It depends on what you want to be compatable with. By far it seems that most use Motorolas or Midlands. They work fine within their respective operating parameters. I recommend replacing the included 600 mah battery packs with higher mah rechargeable (2500) battery packs. Radio shack, online etc... has em. This will give you all day comms, as the lower ones crap out in 3-4 hrs.

What I like better are Tri Squares. They seem to work more effectively for us ( CAG) The down side is that they are not compatable with the
above radios. You can get sets (2) of the above for around 60-75 $$. less if you shop around. Many of the high zoot teams are using Icoms etc... these are much more in $$

As far as head sets go, a wide variety of headsets are available. The input jack is the determining factor.

"The beeping" can be turned off.

Go to Bi-Mart. Buy a set of midland radios ranging in price from 39.95 to 79.95 for a pair, depending on what range you want. Then purchase a set of earbud style PTT headsets for 29.95. Bi-Mart almost always has sales going on, so you will probably pay less than this.

I prefer Midlands as they are a two pin setup and there are no compatibility issues with your headset. With the single pin radios, you have to be careful you get the correct single pin. If I remember correctly, Motorola has a longer pin than the others.

The headsets that I have seen usually will tell you what they are compatible with. The Devgru's ($$$) have interchangeable jacks
