ERDL was originally developed in 1948 after studying examples of captured German camouflage , mainly Sumpfmuster and Liebermuster .
It was tested in combat conditions during 1966 in Vietnam by members of the 101st Airborne and 173rd Airborne LRRP teams and it was found to be an excellent pattern for use in the Jungle and it was officially approved for use in 1967.

M81 kept some of the shapes of ERDL , they just made them thicker and also eliminated the bright Lime Green color from the ERDL pattern.
