Postby Braddock » Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:22 pm

Who has em and what models?
I am looking to replace the midland GMRS and was wondering what models work.
I assume they are programmable and what is involved?
Obviously I want something that can do GMRS freq's

+1, in the market too...I think Ash mentioned F21's in an internal forum thread (SOTA). Will this do or are there other models that have better features?

Unfortunately, I don't, but you might be able to use mine for a little while.

You really won't notice much difference when using them. Except your transmissions will sound clear even in the most remote part of the field. And you *shouldn't* ever loose radio contact. They still send and receive audio like any other radio, except better.

Andrew, I was able to loose contact with the parking lot at the swapmeet game a few months back, but I'm rather sure I was well over a mile away thru thick brush, etc.

tool, they are great radios, I've enjoyed using mine.

Randal, was that at Sniperz Den? I've been all over that field with my Icom and never lost contact. Maybe loose antenna, or half dead battery? I was able to talk to Barrett from Salem to Silverton (10+ miles) with only a little signal degredation (and I was in my car too).

Remember that you only get 14 channels (since anything past 14 on FRS is down to encoding), with no sub channels. That being said, they are beyond amazing. You'll need to try out my super l33t headset too tool ;)

Was a freshly charged battery and the annta was fine, Wes wasn't able to reach Barrett on coms either. Pretty sure Rob was having the same issue.

To be fair, we got pretty damn far off the beaten track.

I use an Icom f4s and it has 32 channels. The damned thing is a beast.

That's where I got mine and I would definitely recommend the business and the radio.

So after a weekend of online research and looking around I have decided to get one of these.

They are new on the market, but they look like they are decent quality and for $107 the price is right.
Full review to come...

Never heard of the brand you got. Hope it's good. The Icom F4S as mentioned above, would have been a very good choice + Icoms are widely used in some military settings and the 2-pin connectors/adapters are more common to get for tactical headsets (Peltors, Sordins TCI..etc).

Am I missing something? Aren't FRS/GMRS radios in the 460 Mhz range? That looks more like a ham radio as far as frequencies. But I haven't been paying much attention to frequencies for a few years. Pacman just took the test recently, ask him for sure.

tool, I think those are in the amateur radio frequencies and it will not work with FRs/GRMS but I might be wrong. I know the guys that are buying these for Amateur radio love them.
