AK-47 Spetsnaz Paint Job - Please Help

I want to start one of my first projects on a gun itself.

To the internals of the gun, I am going t install a 6.02mm tightbore, downgrade the spring, upgrade the motor, and install a 9.6v, however that is not what I need help with.

I do NOT like the look of a solid black gun, it is a personal pet-peeve of mine, although I am not hating on your black gun.

My problem is, I'm buying a Spetsnaz AK to do all these modifications to, but more then anything I'm worried about how the paint is going to stick to the parts that I want to paint.

I want to paint the stock, the magazine, and the front grip up to just before the flash hider a matte tan paint, but I'm afraid of how the paint will stick to the materials. My three questions here are.... Will it work if I try it? What paint should I use? and does the front grip assembly come off for easier painting on a spetsnaz AK?

My advice is to take that 150$ and buy a CYMA and not worry about painting it.

But in an effort not to derail your thread, I would imagine paint would stick just fine to the plastic as long as you wash the parts before hand in hot soapy water. I would recommend some Krylon (or even rustolem, as Krylon is apparently hard to come by at hardware stores) camo series spray paint and a good matte finish.

Please don't use soap and water to clean it.



The best cleaning agent you can use for plastic is a product called "plastic prep". I purchased mine from an automotive paint supply store. This stuff will not only clean the surface, but also remove static from it to help the paint lay down better.

If you can't find that, just wipe it down with alcohol on a rag to remove the grease from it.

Before you do all that, take a 3m scuff pad, http://www.azautobodysupply.com/scpr.html , in a light grit not a heavy grit, and scuff the surface up a little bit so the paint can adhere well. Then use an airhose, or your mouth, to blow the dust off and then clean it with something from above.

Spray it lightly and use multiple coats, don't spray too close to avoid runs. Also remove anything that you can remove from the body parts to be painted. Nothing looks worse than a quick paint job where no prep time was used. Any 10 yr old can spray an AEG, take your time and do it right.

I've done extensive research and haven't been able to find a single tan/black AK-47 under $200. I want it to match my Tan/Black M4, and I told myself that I have two options.

1. Take my time, be slow and careful.

Spray it lightly and use multiple coats, don't spray too close to avoid runs. Also remove anything that you can remove from the body parts to be painted. Nothing looks worse than a quick paint job where no prep time was used. Any 10 yr old can spray an AEG, take your time and do it right.

(On that note, the parts I want to paint are all easily removable, so that's not a problem. I'm going to coat two light layers of tan then use the matte finish and probably a sealent.)

My problems though would then be fitting in a 9.6v battery, which I'd have to achieve by re-wiring the gun to the front of the RIS, then adding a PEQ(it's easily doable, I just don't want to have to do it). The cost would be way higher than just buying the AK Spetsnaz above and a couple cans of Tan Matte Krylon finish and a clear coat sealent. Not to mention the AK-47 Spetsnaz is Cybergun rebranded CYMA. That and the gun wouldn't be small and compact like I'm looking for.

That is definitely NOT a spetsnaz AK.

This is a modern FSB spetsnaz AK. As you wish, not black.


Also, why tan? We live in the Pacific Northwest. Pretty much everything here is green.

It's an AEG, not a car. Your over thinking it. Just get the krylon ultra flat camo and spray several thin coats with a flash dry time in between. It's going to scratch, but if you do it right it wont chip. Then let the parts hang over night. The biggest mistake i make is getting in a hurry and then having thumb prints all over the paint job.
