Converting reg batteries into butterfly style?

Postby Lukens » Mon Jun 25, 2012 3:17 am

I recently bought a cranestock wired AEG, and have a few regular batteries around, and not enough butterfly ones. Ive seen some people around with some batteries that look to be as if they were regular batteries, but then were cut up the middle, and electrical taped into butterfly style.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it feasible? How will it damage my batteries? WIll it at all? and is it dangerous to change the batteries packaging like this? Enough to warrant not doing it?

I already googled it, and cant seem to find anyone mentioning this alteration. I apologize if this sounds incredibly stupid to you, but im not well versed in battery chemistry and electrical systems.

I wouldn't do a modification to a battery unless you for sure know what you're doing and you said you didn't; so don't then. If you are really intent on this conversion instead of buying a $30 battery, you can always take your current battery to a battery store and have them rebuild it for $60+.

Garret bring them to me i've done it before for my m4. It's really easy, I swear i'll pay attention this time while sautering. (last time i accidentally put a male instead of female tayinama on his battery.)

Yea, just recently finished redoing all the wiring in his gun and a new bucking is coming in the mail. Last thing i need so that it'll make an acceptable backup rifle for him.

Question: Why are you still soldering tamiya connectors onto his stuff when you can easily convert it to a better connector, like deans?

And, in my opinion, if the gun can shoot then it works as a back-up.

Also, OP:

As long as you can separate the two rows of battery without damage, then wrap them up again I guess it should be possible.

Or just sell off the working batteries that you don't use and buy butterfly ones. Maybe even 7.4v LiPos with a balancer.

Thanks Hamster. I think im going to try this. As for the LIpo's, I have no knowledge of them, and I really dont want to burn my new rifle out. I dont even know if its Lipo ready, or what that means. Regular batteries seem to work just fine for me right now. Whats the benefit of a Lipo, if im going to risk my gun? Doesnt seem worth it to me. Specially since im on a tight budget.

THEY'RE SO CHEAP.

Also, a fully charged 7.4v LiPo runs as well as a 9.6v NiMh. Pretty much the same thing, iirc, but you'll need the balancer and all the LiPo necessities to avid burning your house down.

You can get a 7.4v lipo and a lipo charger for about the same price you can for a 9.6v battery around here. The lipo usually costs around $5 to $9 each, and the chargers can be had for under $10 if you shop.
