well ive got everything gathered together now, and my new birth cert is on the way. once it shows up ill go down to the PO with the cert, the money, the pictures, my drivers license and the forms and i should be set. if it looks like a prohibitively long wait, ill take it to the city.

If you're going to Hillsboro, they'll send you to the city office anyway, which is just across the street.

Did they tell you how long that'll take? Because I needed a new one when I joined the Guard, and it took the hospital 3 months to get it to me.

or more specifically, http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/chs/order/docs/bc_bro.pdf or www.vitalchek.com . it was almost surprising how easy it was, and it cost about $50. normally i would be wary of it, but its linked directly off of the oregon.gov site.

Yeah, I recently checked out that vitalchek site for my birth certificate since I can't find mine.

Social Security cards are super easy to get. or used to be. When I got mine, I just went to the SS office and showed them my school ID. They also said a pay stub would work as well.

There was a huge line for passports at the PO recently, on Friday afternoon (2-3 PM). I can't say there is again, but it was a remarkably long line (10 plus people)

In the UK are official birth certificates issued through the hospital?

I ask because I know any official/ID paper work won't accept certificates from hospitals - they're more like souvenirs. I have two - the one with my foot prints from the hospital(unofficial), and the official State of California birth certificates that have a purple stamp mark.

EDIT - and it is an extra $80 for expedited service. I went to Mexico a few times in high school and I got a passport for the last time I went because the year before it took me a good six months to get my birth cert back. It still took three weeks to get my passport though, I want to say(this was also in the spring when everyone starts getting ready to travel though).
