...wait for it....

Everyone who prepays 2 weeks in advance and then shows up gets...a PATCH! Butler can get them done for you in a 2 week period and delivered if the artwork is already done. There's your incentive to prepay and show up. Patches are like 18 year old girls to (most) airsofters--they'll do anything to get one. Raise your prices by $5 and give prepayers patches.

Now this is an idea I like.

Can you skip the patch and just give out 18 year old girls?

I don't mind prepaying for an OP if it looks like it's going to be good. I do expect more thought to go into how that money gets spent though. If you're not taking any financial risk in hosting the event, then you should be able to do more with what money you have. No need to figure in a margin of error, just take your profit off the top and go play with the rest.

On the flip side, I see where Rick's coming from. If you're not coming to the family barbecue, you call and cancel. Why should it be any different here?
I'm a "fair weather" airsofter. I only play in the pouring rain, freezing cold, or broiling heat.

I have only hosted 1 event, and this is what happened to me.

A good number of people bailed on the event i was hosting to go to a free one put up weeks before mine.
The weather was perfect, The game style was new and nothing that had been used in a while. So i cannot blame it on that.

I did my best not to step on toes and make sure i wasn't planning on top of someone else's event. I figured it would happen.

I did the patch thing for Nephilim 3, except without the price hike. I had about 25% of players prepay. I can't say it really made a difference in prepaid registrations, although I do still like seeing the patches on people's gear. :)

Being a poor college student who can kind of barely afford to play paid ops in the first place, the $5 price hike for a patch would not appeal to me at all. (especially since I don't have any velcro to put it anywhere) Maybe make it an option? I remember in the past that pre-pays were actually five dollars or so discounted from normal admission...

I still wear the Gregorian Mercenaries Patch.

I think this has become a much bigger issue than it needs to be. Event promoters should be wise with their funds. People should be people of their word when possible.

If a promoter chooses to use pre-pay, with or without pre-pay limitations or 'warnings', so be it. If someone doesn't, then that's their call.

In the end, I really think that each promoter should do whatever they want, and treat it like a company. The issue of bringing things onto a forum to try and get 'the community' to figure out what should happen turns things into a anarchic argument.

I never say I'm going to be at an event, I just show up.
