my advice:
2. the tabs (sf, ranger, ect) sometimes serves a purpose. if you're wearing it because you think you're cool but you dont really get the idea, dont do it. if you're part of a special tasking group at the game (like I have been) then go for it. though sometimes its better to let your play skills speak for you (where I have a marginal room to speak)

as for gear whore awards, I doubt anyone is going to actually make an award based off of who can put on the most expensive stuff.

TL;DR all the other posts, but just be generic and you'll be safe.

Personally I don't care if you want to wear name tapes + faux rank (cadet shit, not actual military rank), but if you're not in the armed forces, don't wear their organization on your uniform, personally I'd rather not have to sift out all the non-prior service members and hear the 30 minute story about someones step dad serving etc.

I didn't even know you could be an E-3 (P). I thought that just sort of happened when your time came up, and SIDPERS ninja-promoted you on your LES. The only time I've seen E-3's not get promoted based on time is when they screw up majorly. Like, get demoted from E-5 to E-3 because they failed a piss test, went to iSTEP, and then proceeded to fail a second UA two months later.

Actual wrangling for promotion, at least in my guard unit, happens with the 4100's and E-4 Evals. Making the jump from -3 to -4 is pretty easy. Making the jump from -4 to -5 takes forever. Although, strangely, once you get your -5, getting your -6 seems to be easy mode.

I think thats because if you're squared away and you take all the schools before hand, while competing for E5, then the contest for E6 gets easier. I know someone who has just completed a school (he's an E5 now) (and I can never remember all this 3 letter shit so I forgot the name) he told me its needed to get your E6.
