I'm not sure what kind of essay your looking for, but if you'll indulge me, I'll tell you a tale of where I came from, and how I got to where I am now with airsoft, the community, and life as a whole.
So, as a wisened old man once said, "Stay a while, and listen".
My first exposure to airsoft was waaaay back in the 1900s. Well, 1998ish anyway. I had just gotten my first decent paintball gun and was loving the outdoor adventures one could have with a group of friends, some farm land, and a few pallets. Like most gamer nerds though, I figured it would be the most epic thing ever to have more realistic gear to play with. TO THE INTERNET!!! In my search for more gun-like paintball guns, which were just starting to get big with the woodsball crowd again, I found a handful of website talking about these replica BB guns. There was one site in particular that had a pretty big selection of these wildly impressive looking 'prop guns' that fired little pellets. 747imports, it turns out, was also wildly overpriced, even back in those days when Tokyo Marui was the only 'real' option and a few hundred dollars from a reputable dealer.
And so, these niffty new toys I discovered were out of my reach. Price and apparent rarity just made them too much of a headache to lay hands on one. In the meantime, I played more Counterstrike and fiddled with my paintball gun to make it a 'cool' as I could make a Red annodized set of plumbing hardware... until fate intervened.
I was discussing these niffty 'air soft' guns I found online with a friend at a local LAN-gaming center, and he said he knew about them, cause he had one in his closet. Wait.. REALLY?! Turns out he didn't use it either. Bought it on a trip to Japan cause he thought it was cool, put it away when he got home and didn't think twice about it - until he heard I was interested, and he offered to sell it to me!!
HOLY CRAP! So I quick-sold some of my paintball junk and bought myself my first airsoft gun. Turns out I was even luckier that I realised at the time - My first airsoft gun was a Tokyo Marui FAMAS SV. Even came with a tracer and a couple mags. I loved it, but being.. well young and foolish - I eventually sold it because I couldn't convince my friends to try it out with me. They were too set in thier paintballing ways.
I had reached out to a couple groups in Oregon early on trying to find people to play with. It wasn't until shortly AFTER I sold my FAMAS that I got a hit back from a team in Silverton, called Nukeproof.
JOY OF JOYS!! More people to play with! I was so excited I jumped at the opertunity to join them on their next game. Took my little Y&P NBB M9 and figured what the hell, it'd still be fun. Turns out I was the oldest player on the field, and one of the best equiped. The only player in my new team that had an AEG was our captain, Jesse (Black 7), and he strangely enough had a FAMAS! F1 rather than SV, but still, I could relate. I had a team, I had a gun, and I had mix-n-match Desert-woodland camo. Life was good.
But then we got cocky and invited another team down to play.
Team 7. They owned the portland territorys. They were heavily armed and equiped, with real military experience. They all had AEGs. We were SO screwed. Then we met Alex and his dufflebag of guns. Seems Team 7 was actually not scary at all. They were a handful of goofballs more interested in sharing the party than kicking out a$$, and thus the partyfavors were handed out. And by party favors, I mean Guns. Alex set his big dufflebag of guns down and gave them all out to us. It was awesome.
Years went on and I stayed in that semi-noob state, not being able to afford much in the way of gear, I played in as many skirmishes as I could - big even at that point were practically non-existant and organising was done on the 3 or 4 small 'team' websites. MSAT, Team 7, Nukeproof, and uh... crap I forget the name of the beaverton group.. BASC or something. We, nukeproof, hosted a handful of games in silverton both on 'tire hill' and at 'Logans alley' and good times were had. It was somewhere in this timeframe alot of the guys you know and love really picked up the game and ran with it. Some newer guys had some grand ideas... some panned out some didn't.
One of the ideas that really worked out was a little website idea combining all the little team forums into one primary location so we could organise larger events. Welcome to Airsoft Pacific. =p
With Matt rolling whole-hog on making a great community hangout, and my team losing it's fields, we drifted apart for a time - and I away from the hobby as a whole. I just coudn't invest the time or money to keep up with the likes of Matt and Alex and Bill (Pre-sniper-god status). Milsim, large-scale events, scripted operations, and new companies making new guns - along with retailers springing up all over the internet. It was a good time where things just blossomed, and I had to miss alot of it. Matt would later dub me 'The constant noob' because I would go through cycles of buying new equipment, playing a few skrims, falling away to other parts of my life and selling my gear off - only to miss my hobby and start over.
Through it all, I still had the same hodge-podge of Desert camo which made no sense for our forested enviroments. I decided I needed to atleast get something green - and since i needed something green specificly for the next event I wanted to attended, I picked up an OD green 'flight' coverall. Worked as intended, making my first real 'role' played in an event fun and interesting. Playing the Suicide bomber at.. uh.. Fat Rabbit? I think it was - It wasn't much of a shooting match for me as much as it was a 'Follow Braddocks directions until he tells me to charge the bunker at the top of the hill screaming like a crazy man and blowing up half the enemy team in one swoop'. It was great. Then I twisted my ankle and had to limp my way back to our HQ bunker and 'defend' for 3 more hours. Still some of the most fun I've had in our hobby.
Then the constant noob kicked in again. Only this time, it wasn't so much about not playing as it was more about playing with my friends. I've been to a few events here and there over the years, but mostly I drop into free skirmish games when I can get Nukeproof together for a game, along with a few of my personal friends.
My personal circle of friends got big enough we could go play by ourselves and still have a good time. We'd play every few weeks out in West salem, at Warpaint outdoor. 15-20 players heavy, and treking up to the meadow for a day of plain-old elimination was great fun. Simple, fast, clean trigger time with people we all trusted.
Somewhere along the line, I decided I needed to have some solid equipment and quite messing around with half-assed camo, and bought myself some of the new hotness - Marpat. Pants and top, along with a UTG Marpat vest and I was officially a sexy beast.
We still drop in for an event or 'public' skirmish now and then - I've been to a couple Santa wars, and Wacky White rabbit was fun, among others, primarily dropping into a public skirmish now and then at Ivans, for example Tequilla Sunrise - but now I'm looking to come back into the fray more often, with more players. I want to be part of the active community again.
What does any of this have to do with your glorious giveaway? I'm not really sure, honestly.
Been in the same set of Marpat camo for ~6 years now because it works, just looking for something new. I mean, I can't say I 'deserve' to have niffty new Multicam stuff - but I've been using the same one-step-behind camo and guns for a long time - and still had a blast doing it!
To me, this give-away is exactly the spirit of this community that really hooked me in the begining. The experienced leader bringing his dufflebag full of goodies to share, just so everyone could have more fun. I've shared BBs, loaned out guns and gear, and lead my herd of noobs to fun adventures, and I really appreciate when something like this comes up for the community too. I'd just like to have a shot at looking like I belong with the experienced of the community, instead of being the 'constant noob' again. =p
With all the pretty flowers and twigs in your ghillie.. perhaps you should take up gardening?
